

She was a graduate of New Bern High School, Saint Mary's Junior College, and Duke University. After graduation she taught high school English in Farmville, NC and New Bern, NC and then spent two years working in the Library of Congress. She returned to North Carolina to take courses in the School of Library Science at UNC in Chapel Hill and was then employed as assistant librarian at Broughton High School.
She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, a past member of the Junior League of Raleigh and the Wake Committee of the National Society of Colonial Dames, Past President of the Friends of the Wake County Bar Association, and also a past member of the High Noon Book Club, Tryon Palace Council of Friends, the Carolina Country Club, and the Assembly Club.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Herbert Logan Toms, Jr. in 2010 and by her sister Mary Windley Dunn Tillman of Chapel Hill in 2007.
Survivors include her son Herbert Logan Toms, III and his wife Lynn of Durham; granddaughter Elizabeth Ellis Toms; brother John Guion Dunn, III of New Bern; brother-in-law Rollie Tillman, Jr. of Chapel Hill, and several nieces and nephews.
The family extends its appreciation to the outstanding staff of the Rosewood Health Center and The Cypress retirement community for their long-running care and support.
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the clubhouse of The Cypress of Raleigh, 8801 Cypress Lakes Dr. Raleigh.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 East Edenton St. Burial will follow at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
