Margaret Inez Winter, born March 24, 1924 in Savannah, Georgia, died Thursday, March 18, 2010 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Margaret grew up in Savannah, where she met Dean Winter, a new 2nd lieutenant in the US Army, while he was stationed at Ft Stewart, Georgia. They were married in Savannah on March 15, 1944. When Dean returned from the war in Europe, he and Margaret moved to Illinois and later to Maryland. They moved to Raleigh in 1971.
Margaret’s devotion was to Dean and their children, but her energy, commitment and love also found an outlet in her work in the church and her jobs. She was a long-time active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Raleigh, but also held various synod offices in the larger organization of the Lutheran church. Margaret became interested in real estate when she worked in Maryland, and after coming to North Carolina, became a licensed real estate broker, working for the Birch-Moore agency for many years. Margaret and Dean began their international traveling later in their lives, but once started, it scarcely took a break, leading them to Europe and Asia, where they met, and kept, many new friends. Margaret remained active in many groups besides her church and especially enjoyed her weekly book club. She will be remembered for her love of her family, her devotion to her church, and her generosity to all.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Dean, her daughter, Carolyn, and her grandson, Joshua. She is survived by her sons, Dean and Allan, her granddaughter, Miriam Winter, her grandson, Christopher Winter, and her granddaughter, Amelia Winter. She is also survived by her brother Robert Jenkins, of Rincon, Georgia, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
Celebration of Life Services will be held 7:00 pm Monday, March 22, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 5010 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27609.
