Mary Elise Elder Carter

Mary Elise Elder Carter, 60, passed away into the arms of her Lord, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday afternoon, July 28, 2010 in the comfort of her home, surrounded by loved ones. Born on January 11, 1950 in Pittsburgh, PA; she was the daughter of Robert and Anne Elder.

Mary grew up in Jenkintown, PA and attended Stephens College and Columbia College; both in Missouri. She was a member of the international singing group Up With People for two years, singing in countries all over the world.

Mary enjoyed her career as a flight attendant with Delta Airlines for 34 years; based first in Miami, and then Atlanta. She was a resident of Raleigh for 17 years. She was an active member of Calvary Presbyterian Church of America.

Mary enjoyed traveling and loved people. She was much loved by friends from all over the world. She had a great sense of fun, and enthusiasm about everything she did. Her smile was contagious and her nickname from her youth was “Mary Sunshine”.

She is survived by her son Robert Carter, of Raleigh, NC; twin sister Martha Carpenter, of Raleigh, NC; and mother Anne Elder, of Jenkintown, PA; nieces Elise Carpenter, of Raleigh, Sarah Hunt, of Del Mar, CA and Allison Dickson, of Dallas, TX and nephew Andrew Atchley, of Denver, CO.

Family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon, August 1st from 2-4 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue). Graveside Funeral Rites will be held on Monday, August 2, 2010 at 4 PM at Raleigh Memorial Park (friends are welcome). We will be celebrating Mary’s life at a Memorial Service on Monday evening at 7 PM at Calvary Presbyterian Church of America Church (6520 Ray Road in Raleigh).
