
Her husband, Donald K. Fry, died in 2003. She is survived by a son, Donald K. Fry, Jr. and wife Joan of Charlottesville, Virginia; a daughter, Sandra F. Sink of Kure Beach; two grandsons, Jason Fry and wife Emily of New York City; and Joel Sink of Raleigh, North Carolina; and a great grandson, Joshua Marcus Fry of New York City.
Mrs. Fry served her church for 40 years. She led in many capacities in the United Methodist Church, both local and worldwide.
She was a member of the General Board of Church and Society for eight years, the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry for four years, elected to General Conferences three times, and Jurisdictional Conferences four times. She was a delegate to World Methodist Conferences in Denver, Hawaii, and Nairobi.
Mrs. Fry served as President of Church Women United for two years, President of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, and President of the North Carolina Conference United Methodist Women.
She was the first woman President of the North Carolina Council of Churches, which granted her its Distinguished Service Award.
Mrs. Fry served as trustee of Louisburg College for 20 years and trustee of Methodist Home for Children for eight years. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Award from Louisburg College and the President’s Medallion from Methodist College. The Raleigh News and Observer named her “Tar Heel of the Week” in 1983.
She was a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church since 1944. Her service expressed her love for her local church. She recruited women into leadership positions. Mildred Fry represented the unheard members of our society. In meetings, she often asked, “Who gets left out?”
Memorials may be sent to Louisburg College or Hayes Barton United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held January 4, 2011 at 11 AM at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church.
