Minnie P. Potts Shores

Minnie was born August 11, 1918 to the late Inez Burton Potts and Charles H. Potts. She received her education in the Yadkin County Public Schools and at Guilford College.

Minnie had an active and interesting career. After college she was Principal of a grammar school in Wythe County, VA. When America entered WW II she worked as a laboratory technician at the Hercules Powder Plant in Radford, VA. After the war she taught middle school in Yadkin County, NC.

In 1945 she married Adam H. Shores upon his discharge from the US Air Force. They moved to Kinston, NC where she taught middle school in Lenoir County until moving to Raleigh in 1948.

After coming to Raleigh, she went to work for Nationwide Insurance Company and retired after 30 years of service. After retiring, she worked part-time for the Wake County Board of Elections for several years. She also organized the Nationwide Retirees Club.

Minnie had many other interests in which she remained active until her death. Her church, Trinity Baptist, was most important. She taught Sunday School for over 30 years, served as a Deacon, served on several committees and sang in the Senior Choir.

Minnie loved everyone she ever met. Her young friends kept her feeling young, she said. The family expresses a special thank you to the many young friends for all they did to encourage Minnie in her later years.

Minnie is preceded in death by her husband, Adam Shores; sisters: Helen Madden, Pearl Newberry, and Nettie Butchar; and her nephew, Raymond Madden.

She leaves behind her loving daughter Cora Shores and her sister Hattie Watts, and nephews: Charles Madden, Stanley Butchar and Albert Newberry and niece Helen Moe as well as several great nephews and nieces.

The family will receive from 5-7 Tuesday January 31, 2017 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St Mary’s St., Raleigh. A funeral service will be held 11 am Wednesday February 1, 2017 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St Mary’s St., Raleigh. Interment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
