Otto James (Jim) Clontz, III was born on May 17, 1958 in Fayetteville, NC to parents Otto James Clontz, Jr. and Elizabeth Flowers Anderson. Jim had two older sisters, Sarah Snyder (deceased) and Cynthia Clontz.

After graduating from Myrtle Beach High School, SC and attending Coastal Carolina College in SC, Jim joined the U.S. Air Force in 1981 and served with honors on a four-year assignment at the 831 Supply Squadron (TAC) at George AFB, in CA. During his military service, Jim received several awards including Airman of the Year in 1984 and the Air Force Commendation Medal. In addition to his military honors, Jim went on to receive an AS in Business Administration and AA in Liberal Arts from Victor Valley CC, in Victorville, CA, a BS in Business Management (with honors) and an MBA from Campbell University, in NC. Let us not forget his acting bug! Jim can be seen on the big screen in the movie King Kong Lives and several television productions.

Later in life, Jim moved to Wilmington, NC to be closer to his family and worked as a Real Estate Appraiser at his father’s company. After his appraising days, he became certified in Fiber Optics, Bioprocessing Manufacturing, and Quality Auditing to work for companies like Corning, Wyeth, Pfizer, and Novartis. For the past 20 years, Jim and his family have lived in Apex, NC but often returned to Wilmington to spend time with his adult children and enjoy the coastal area.

Jim met the love of his life Lucia Maria Mafra Dutra from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil while attending Coastal Carolina College. It was love at first sight and they were married at George AFB in 1982. Jim and Lucia started their family in 1984 with their daughter Anna Gabriela and then completed their perfect family with the birth of their son, James Alexandre, in 1991. Jim was immensely proud of his children. Jim became a grandfather in 2017 to Mason Utah Huffman. Those two were inseparable. Mason loved his “grandpa.”

Jim loved the outdoor life and spending time at the beach. He loved animals, loved to cook, and travel the world with the love of his life. Jim is remembered as always having a positive outlook on life, sharing his big smile and infectious laugh. Jim had a great sense of humor, loved to talk to people, was an avid reader, and had an undeniable love for God.

In addition to his beloved family, Jim leaves behind his son-in-law Ryan Huffman, his mother-in-law Maria, and all the friends he made over the years.

Gabriela Huffman is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Jim was a bright face who I had the privilege of knowing for several years at our congregation Sha'arei Shalom in Cary. His demeanor was always cheerful and faith-filled. He knew what was right and he stood for what was right. I enjoyed being his Facebook friend, routinely liking his pointed posts. Jim was gone from us too soon and I know he will be missed by many, but I look forward to seeing him again on the other side.

Jim has been a reminder to me of the love of life we all can show. It is so easy to call him "Big Jim," not just because of his height and size, but because of his great heart and immense love of others. When I was directing Powerpoint in the Sound Booth, I could tell when Jim walked into the synagogue. Not only because his head was one of the few that cleared the booth's wall, but because of that magnanimous smile he would inevitably sport my way. Always encouraging, I don't think I could ever count the number of "likes" on my wife's and my Facebook photos, and the compliments he gave in person and online. Jim is and was a great guy. And great guys are missed.

Lucia,

Jim was such a godly man. An inspiration to those who had the privilege to know him, To those who got to see his love for God and his always positive and joyful attitude. The world has lost a wonderful man. May God hold you tight and bring you comfort and peace during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathy to your family. I did not know Jim that well; I only saw him in service at Sha'arei Shalom. Jim always had that big smile and easy to talk to. Always saying hi and giving an ear. Jim's love for GOD was very apparent to me. I feel blessed to have made his acquaintance . Again my deepest sympathy for your loss! Prayers out to your family for comforting.

I met Jim at Congregation Sha'arei Shalom and was immediately struck by his gentle personality, which was abundantly packed into his linebacker sized body. He always had a smile and a hug when I would greet him, and he always had a positive attitude about life, even when he was struggling with health challenges. My life is better for having met Jim and I already miss him. May God shower his family with comfort and strength in this time of loss and in the days ahead. <3

This news was quite a surprise. It had to have been a great comfort to him to be to able to spend his last moments with his loved ones in his own home. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy during this most difficult time. As time passes, good memories overcome the loss and sadness you suffer now. I will keep you in my thoughts as you move forward and if there is anything at all I can do to help, please do let me know.

Very kind regards,

Amy.
