

John Phillip Carroll, 98, of Raleigh died Thursday, May 20, 2021. Phillip was born in Wake County on August 7, 1922 to the late, William Thomas Carroll and Mary Allen McLure. He graduated from Hugh Morson High School in Raleigh and later earned a B.S. Degree in Horticulture from N.C. State.
When he was 19, Phillip joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. As a member of the 5th Marine Division, he participated in the campaign on Iwo Jima in February of 1945. He also served in the Marine Corps Reserves during the Korean War. On August 21, 1948, Phillip married his sweetheart, Sarah Hendry Porter at Christ Church in Raleigh. They were happily married for 57 years. Together they operated Carroll's Greenhouses, Inc., a successful wholesale flower-growing business from 1952 to 1997. Recently Phillip enjoyed working out at the YMCA, reading mystery novels, watching NCSU basketball, and spending time with his family and cat, Samantha.
Phillip was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Porter Carroll; brother, Bill Carroll; and sister, Marie LeBlanc.
He is survived by his son, John Phillip Carroll, Jr. and wife, Thao Nguyen Carroll of Raleigh; his son, James Porter Carroll and wife, Brenda Foley Carroll of Cary; grandson, James Phillip Carroll; granddaughter, Stephanie Nguyen Carroll; and nephew, Phillip LeBlanc of Colorado.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
