On July 11th of this year God reached out His hand and gently took Phillip Weldon Olson to His heavenly home. At 77 years old, Phil stepped peacefully into eternity, leaving behind more than memories - he left a legacy shaped by love, lifted by laughter, and grounded in gentle strength.
Phillip, known to all as Phil, was born on November 23, 1947 in Bloomington, Illinois to Albert and Caroline Olson. His parents and older siblings, Marilyn and John, lived together in Bloomington until they moved to Jacksonville Florida when he was 7 years old. His family grew to a total of 6 children, adding Janice, Christine, and David. Phil was always the peace-maker and prankster of the family and grew up as a devoted Lutheran with the support and guidance of his parents and God. Phil had a way of easing tension with a quiet word or a well-timed grin that let you know things would be okay.
One piece of wisdom from his father became the foundation of how Phil lived: “The best life is built on one simple truth: Put God first, then family, and lastly, work.”
After graduating from high school in Jacksonville, FL, Phil joined the U.S. Navy alongside his older brother John, serving a four-year tour of duty aboard a submarine tender, the USS Canopus, in the Mediterranean. It was a time that shaped him - through service, growth, and the strength of brotherhood.
When Phil returned home, he began working at State Farm in the data processing department and pursued a college education - always eager to expand his mind and take life in stride.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Phil — a free soul at heart — had a wide ranging career and wore many hats. Over the years, he served as a district service manager for Toyota dealerships and later as a cross-country truck driver. He officially retired five years ago — although for Phil, “retirement” simply meant focusing on what mattered most — faith, family, and peace.
True to his father’s words, Phil never let work define him. His faith came first. His family next. Work was the tool, not the purpose.
Phil’s love and presence lives on in those who were blessed to know him: his loving wife, Jean, his children Stephen, Lindsay, and Micheal; his brother, David; and his sisters Janice and Christine. His legacy also lives on through his many nieces, nephews, and their children.
In Heaven, Phil was reunited with his parents. Albert and Caroline; his sister, Marilyn, his brother, John; and so many loved one who went before him. Phil had a way of making people feel safe, seen, and loved. His humor was quiet but constant. His compassion was real and unshakable. Whether offering advice, sharing a story or simply showing up when someone needed him, Phil made the world better by how he lived — one kind act, one steady step at a time. He did not seek greatness — he lived it in his faith, his love and in his everyday choices.
Phil lived a good life. He walked a faithful path. And now, he rests in the arms of the Lord. Now it is our job to carry his memory forward— with the same love, kindness, and joy that he brought to us. He will always be missed, and by God’s grace his love and spirit will always live on in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 2:00 pm at Saint Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Rd. Raleigh, NC 27608.
Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, is serving the Olson family.
