He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII aboard a supply ship in the Pacific theater. Upon returning home, Richard attended college at Indiana State Teacher’s College where he received a bachelor’s degree in English, and also met his future wife, Gareta. After graduation he began his career as a high school teacher, and soon transitioned into a career at Rockwell Manufacturing as a Data Entry Specialist. In 1965, he moved with his family from Indiana to Raleigh to work at a new office of what was now called Rockwell International. In Raleigh Richard became and remained a very active member at Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church.
Richard enjoyed tennis, bowling, and was an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed a past time in photography. However, of all the things Richard can be remembered for, few things top the fact that he loved chocolate. One might say (and he did say once) that chocolate runs through his veins!
Richard is survived by his children, Leonard Lentz, Reta Elliott and her husband, Larry, Betty Elliott and her husband, Tate, and Lisa Lentz; grandchildren, Jason, Emily and Max; and cousins Maxine (Irwin) Olney, Barbara (Irwin) Roberts, and Esther (Wolf) Lentz with whom he was very close.
Family visitation will be at 10 AM on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 4900 Kaplan Dr., Raleigh, NC 27606 with a memorial service following at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The American Cancer Society, 8300 Health Park #10, Raleigh, NC 27615 or to Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church. Condolences may be made online at www.MitchellatRMP.com.
