

Robert Otho Campen, Sr. died peacefully surrounded by his daughter Terilyn and Son-in-law Michael Wednesday in their home after a short illness under Hospice care. He is survived as well by two sons, Robert Otho Campen, Jr.,of Apex and Christopher Lee Campen of Colorado; four sisters, Bette Lassiter, Judy Stephenson, Margaret Poole and Sonya Collins, all of Raleigh, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death last year by his wife of 48 years, Hilda Frances. They were married on Veterans Day, November 11, 1961, a significant date, because Campen spent the following 20 years in the Air Force as a Communications Specialist, and the family joined him in several of the countries where he was stationed, including Greece for four years, The Phillipines, China, Germany, England and Vietnam. He was awarded three Oak Leaf Clusters in recognition of service above and beyond the call of duty. Robert Campen had attended Broughton High School and later earned his diploma in England while serving with the Air Force. On his retirement, he became a Corrections Officer for the State of North Carolina for another 25 years, meanwhile attending evening classes and earning Associate Degrees at Kings College and North Carolina Wesleyan. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his integrity, reliability, and his love for his family.Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 24th at 11 AM in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home on Glenwood Ave; with a viewing from 10 AM until time of service. Burial to follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, with military honors.
