Born on April 10, 1943, in Havana, FL, to Virginia Tillis Stephens and Alvin Stephens, Ronny grew up with a curiosity and creativity that would shape the rest of his life. He attended Florida State University—where his love for the Seminoles began—and carried with him a true entrepreneurial spirit.
Over the years he founded several businesses, including Midtown Magazine and 5West Magazine, ventures that blended his talent, vision, and relentless work ethic. Even in his eighties, he was always dreaming up the “next thing,” working right up until the final weeks of his life.
Ronny had a remarkable gift for creating beauty with his hands. Whether he was sketching, carving, or building a dollhouse one tiny detail at a time, he poured care and imagination into everything he touched. His artistic talents weren’t just hobbies—they were expressions of the way he saw the world: full of possibility and heart.
He was also a passionate sports fan and an impressive golfer, happiest with a club in his hand or cheering on his beloved FSU Seminoles. But nothing matched the joy he found in the simple, steady companionship of his chow, Max—his best friend and shadow. Their bond brought him tremendous comfort throughout his life.
Above all, Ronny was devoted to his family. He took pride in his children and grandchildren, encouraging their dreams, celebrating their accomplishments, and loving them with unwavering support and loyalty.
Ronny is survived by his four children, Shana Stephens Plott (Kelly), Andrea Stephens, Marcus Stephens, and Matthew Stephens; and by ten grandchildren—Patrick, Emma, and Harrison Plott; Dylan, Hayden, Sam, and Sawyer Stephens; Grace Stephens; and Mackenzie and Sarah Grace Steiner. He is also survived by his brothers, Larry and Craig Stephens. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Alvin Stephens.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jeremiah Boles, Leslie Neal, and their team at UNC Rex Cancer Care, as well as the compassionate caregivers at Transitions Hospice Care, for their dedicated and loving support of Ronny and his family.
A casual and joyful celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 29th at 2:00pm, location to be determined.
