Ruth Mae Coltrane

Mrs. Ruth Mae Coltrane, 66, passed away Monday, September 11, 2023. Mrs. Coltrane was born February 9, 1957 to the late Donald Ray George and Barbara Jean Mason George. She worked as an elementary school teacher for over 40 years and retired at North Forest Pines Elementary. Mrs. Coltrane worked at several elementary schools in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia over the years. She spent her life educating children, which was her joy. Mrs. Coltrane frequently visited The Shephard’s Church in Cary, NC. She loved her family dearly. Mrs. Coltrane is preceded in death by her parents, Donald Ray George and Barbara Jean Howerton; brother, Charles “Skeeter” Terrell Howerton.

Mrs. Coltrane is survived by her husband John Coltrane of Fuquay Varina, NC; brother, Freddie Howerton (Tammy) of Henderson, NC; Sister-in-law, Faye Howerton of Timberlake, NC; daughter, Laura Nelms (David) of Clayton, NC; daughter, Meredith Coltrane of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Lily Nelms of Clayton, NC, Liam Nelms of Clayton, NC; nephews, Brian Howerton and Adam Howerton, and many great nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Monday, September 18, 2023 at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel.

Flowers are acceptable or donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
