
In 2000, he married Chung Choi in Chicago, lived in Fullerton, California, before settling in Raleigh, North Carolina. For 25 years, Andrew was a loving husband to Chung and a devoted father to her children, Andrew Choi, Elsie Choi-Pletts, and the late Frank Choi. He taught his grandson, Leo Hyun-Soo Pletts, to speak Korean and shared with him a love of long nature hikes and sweets.
Andrew is also survived by his son, Ji Hyun Peter Hwang (wife Kay), and their children—Scott, Jason, Eric, Eunjoo, and Eunhae—as well as his daughter, Yumi Kwon Lammers (husband Tom), and their children, Allyson, Gabriel, and the late Zachary.
After the Korean War, Andrew worked for the U.S. Embassy and then joined the Korean Air Force, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, resigning in 1964 to further his education in the United States.
He earned a bachelor’s degree from Lewis University, then a master’s from Rosary College. He was a professor at Chicago State University where he taught Library Sciences, retiring in 1996.
Andrew enjoyed hiking, golf, and travel. With Chung, he visited Italy, Greece, Malta, Northern Africa, Mexico, Norway, Russia, and many other destinations. Most of all, he cherished time with his family.
A funeral service for Sang will be held Thursday, February 6, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Raleigh Korean Presbyterian Church, 5408 Duraleigh Rd, Raleigh, NC 27612.
