Shirley Chappell Turbiville

Shirley Chappell Turbiville, 85, of Raleigh, NC, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2025. Born on May 2, 1939, to Sherwood and Mary, Shirley lived a full and loving life devoted to her family and rooted in the home that meant everything to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherwood and Mary Chappell, her sister, Mary Chappell, and her husband, Robert “Bob” Turbiville.

Shirley was wife to Major, with whom she had 3 children, and later to Bob, with whom she shared nearly 40 years of marriage. She was a loving mother to Jim (Barb) Herring, Debbie (Ed) Boyd, and Barbara (Chuck) Haas, and bonus mom to Keely (Phillip) Stone and Melinda (Jim) Hickman.

She was a proud grandmother to Candice (Mike) Casper, Scarlett (Brett) Miller, Robert (Brooke) Young, Trevor Young, Phillip David (Jennifer) Stone, Carl Haas, Erik Haas, Catie Miller, Kendrick Miller, and Jon Hickman, and great-grandmother to Landon, Payton, Hayden, Rowan, Raegan, Emmy, Dezi, Haylee, Oakleigh, Daniel, Magen, Myra, and Julia.

Shirley spent her final years in the home she cherished—the very house where she grew up and later built a life with her beloved Bob. With the help of three extraordinary caregivers—Ms. Peggy, Desirae, and Lisa Marie—Shirley was able to remain in the place she loved most. Their kindness and care brought comfort and dignity to her final years, and the family is forever grateful.

She leaves behind a legacy of fierce love, unforgettable memories, and unwavering devotion to her family. Shirley will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 21st at 6:00 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612. The Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday, April 22nd at 1:00 PM, also at Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park.
