It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Silma “Sibby” Lee Prince, a loving and devoted grandmother and friend to all whose lives she touched. Sibby left us on December 12, 2022 while sleeping peacefully at her home away from home: Breckenridge Retirement Center in Rocky Mount, NC. She was in her 98th year.
Sibby was born in Asheboro, NC to Walter and Ida Mae Cox on October 8, 1924. After graduating high school, Sibby met James “Jim” Prince whom she married March 14, 1953. Jim worked as a civil engineer for the NC Department of Transportation, and Sibby worked at Pitney Bowes in the accounting department. Her lifelong dream of motherhood came true with the arrival of her daughter Janis Sue Prince, whom she loved dearly. After becoming a mother, Sibby was a proud homemaker, devoting her time to caring for those around her.
Sibby and Jim were intrepid travelers and enjoyed summering in Europe or exploring the United States. From Bridge clubs to garden clubs, Sibby always surrounded herself with family and friends - the people who made her feel the most loved. She was an active and faithful member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, including the Wesleyan Fellowship Sunday School Class, a member of Circle 7, as well as working on the Altar Guild for many years.
Sibby is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Michelle and Dana Verhoeven, niece Linda Bass, and numerous other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, James Howard Prince; her daughter, Janis Verhoeven; her brother, Athel Cox; and sisters, Althea C. Viverette, Alberta C. Stout, Carletta C. Stevenson, and Dee C. Spencer.
Many thanks to the staff of Breckenridge Retirement Center, as well as a very special thanks to Linda and Rex Bass and the entire Bass family, for the love and special care they have given Sibby over the last 8 years.
A celebration of Sibby’s life will be held at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Rd., Raleigh, on Tuesday, December 20th beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Growing in Love Fund, Hayes Barton UMC.
Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh.
