Susan Dee Colangelo, born Susan Dee Zippin, passed on Monday, March 5 after a long courageous fight with Multiple Myeloma. She leaves behind her loving husband, John, son Daniel Scott, grandchildren Dylan and Justin and sister, Debby. Sue’s daughter, Christine Rene, predeceased her.
Sue spent her first 15 years in Cleveland, Ohio and then moved to California where she finished her education, ultimately graduating from California State University at Long Beach. Sue began her professional career as a passionate elementary teacher in Los Alamitos, California. In 1971 while sunning at the beach, she met the love of her life, John. They married on March 24, 1972.
Joy entered their lives in 1977 with the addition of their children, Daniel and Christine. The family moved to Raleigh in 1986, with 5 cats and 3 dogs. Sue continued her teaching career as an elementary technology teacher in Durham. She retired 9 years ago. Life progressed with many adventures near and far, and amazing lasting friendships.
Sue was a devoted friend and advocate for the battle against Multiple Myeloma. With her crew of supporters, she launched Sue’s Sunshine and raised $80,000 over 6 years.
Services honoring Sue’s life will be held Thursday, March 8 at 9:00 am at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh. John invites you to a reception immediately following the service at the family's home. Burial will be at 1 pm at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.
