

Suzanne “Suzy” Long Jurgensen Goree, born November 7, 1936, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025. She was born to James Anderson Long and Mary Stuart Long of Roxboro. Suzy was a graduate of Person High School, and a former Miss Roxboro. She attended Agnes Scott College in Atlanta before transferring to Duke, where she met her first husband Sonny Jurgensen. They married in Roxboro, and she then followed him to Philadelphia and raised her two sons, Greg and Scott. Years later, she returned to Durham to complete her degree at Duke where she met and married Dr. John A. Goree “Jack”, with whom she enjoyed over 45 years of love, laughter and travel. They spent many happy days at Bald Head Island and Hope Valley Country Club.
Suzy was a lover of all animals especially her many dogs over the years. Suzy cherished gatherings with her family and the many social occasions she shared with her dear friends, especially her lifelong friends Sandra, Charlotte, Joan, and Mary, who visited her often at The Cardinal.
Suzy is preceded in death by Jack and her great grandchild, Ray.
She is survived by her sons: Greg Jurgensen (Elizabeth) of Basalt, Colorado, Scott Jurgensen (Sylvia) of Raleigh; her brother, Jamie Long (Robert) of Mexico; her stepsons, John Goree (Katherine) of Chapel Hill, Conrad Goree of Wilmington; her grandchildren, Ginny Jurgensen Stiles (Michael) of Atlanta, Augie Jurgensen (Brooke), Anderson Jurgensen (Mallory), Hanna Jurgensen (Charlie), Catherine Currin (Chris), all of Raleigh; Belle and Toby Jurgensen of Basalt; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 10th at 10:00 am at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church, 82 Kimberly Dr., Durham, NC 27707. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Cardinal staff that cared for her and Transitions LifeCare, for their support during the end of Suzy’s life.
