

A native of Wake County, Veda was born in Zebulon to the late Charles and Pattie Rhodes. Her family moved to Enfield, NC in 1945 and she graduated from Enfield Graded School in 1958.
Veda was a gifted pianist and attended Meredith College to pursue a degree in music. After Meredith, she went to work for Cameron Brown Company on Wade Avenue.
In 1965 she married Tom Sumner Jr. and they had two children. They were married until his passing in 1977. She married her second husband, Reid Jones, in 1979 and they were married for 39 years until his passing in 2019.
Veda was active in her faith community and shared her trust in the Lord with her family and friends. She enjoyed her Tuesday bible study groups, Salt Shakers and at Christ Episcopal Church.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by her older sister, Clara R. Dozier and older brother, Charles H. Rhodes.
She is survived by her daughter Lynn Sumner Collar and husband John of Raleigh and her son Thomas B. Sumner III of Southern Shores and her two furbabies Harpo and Sadie.
Her greatest joy was being Nonnie to grandsons Cameron Collar and PFC Jeremy Collar; and Gan-Gan to grandchildren Tom, Livia, Kemp and Lincoln Sumner.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her nieces Roberta Waynik (Bob) of Wendell, Charlene Price (Gerald) of Zebulon and Denise Rhodes (Jim Crabtree) of Raleigh.
Her family would like to thank Lekita Essa and her wonderful team from Lekitacare for their compassion, love and support provided to Veda.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday April 8 at Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh at 11:00 AM. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall.
