

Virginia D.P. “Sammy” Doughton was born August 4th, 1922 in Baltimore, Maryland, and was the daughter of James H. Pou, Jr. and Virginia Davis of Raleigh, NC. She was educated at Murphy School, Peace High School, St. Mary’s High School, Salem Jr. College, St. Mary’s Jr. College and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 1945. Upon graduating from college Sammy was the first sailing instructor at Camp Seagull in Arapahoe, NC.
Sammy was an avid outdoor sportsman, excelling at shooting, tennis, golf, boating, and especially sailing. In her younger years Sammy was the terror of the waterfront, winning numerous sailboat races in what at the time was a male dominated sport.
In her later years she loved fishing out of Morehead City in her seventeen-foot Boston Whaler and continued boating and fishing until she was eighty years old. She was an accomplished historian, genealogist, and author of two books and several articles. She was recognized by the North Carolinian Society for her historical contributions.
Virginia was first married to the late J. Horton Doughton of Laurel Springs, NC on March 31st, 1950. She remarried the late Walter Ernst Teich of Lake Forest, Illinois on May 11th, 1968.
Virginia Doughton is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Ann Pou McClamroch, her two children, Virginia D. Finley(husband Edward S. Finley), James H. Doughton (wife Anna DuBose Doughton), and her four grandchildren, Edward D. Finley, Robert W. Finley, James H. Doughton Jr.(wife Lisl Kuutti Doughton), and Anna Lawrence Doughton.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday April 19, 2014 at 11:00AM at The First Presbyterian Church, 112 South Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC. Reception to immediately follow the service at the church.

A memorial service will be held at Springmoor Retirement Center in Raleigh at a later date.
