
Walter Noel Bond, 86, of Woodland Terrace, Cary, NC, died September 25, 2010 at the Hospice Home of Wake County. He was born on November 12, 1923 in Montreal, Canada, to William and Edith McDowell Bond. He spent his childhood in Canada, and later Brooklyn, NY. His family ultimately settled in Fredericksburg, VA, which became "home". He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute prior to entering the military during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he completed his formal education receiving a BS degree in Mining Engineering. Upon graduation he married Mary Jane Bean and eventually joined her family's shoe business, Virginia Shoe Company. He later relocated his family to Carlisle, PA to become President of Manufacturing of Kinney Shoe Corporation. When he retired he and Jane returned to their Southern roots and settled in Skidaway Island, Savannah, GA where they enjoyed 10 years of golf, travel, and a good life. When Jane died in 2000 Walter moved to Woodland Terrace in Cary to be closer to family. There he became a part of an extended family and cherished friends, in particular the "girls" of his bridge group. He is survived by his three sons, Walter N. Bond, and wife Charlotte, of Carlisle, PA, William M. Bond, MD and wife Michelle of Houston, TX, David A. Bond and wife, Pam, of Raleigh, nine grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, sisters, Edie Hart of Brewster, MA, Doris McCauley, of Dundee, NY, Gladys Gombus, of Orleans, MA, and a very special friend, Lillian Kendall, of Fredericksburg, VA.
A private graveside service will be held in Fredericksburg, VA at a later date.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Hospice of Wake County and suggests memorials be made to the William M. Dunlap Center for Caring.
