

Hank was born in Marion, Alabama, on November 18, 1938, to the late Dr. Weymouth Tyree Jordan, Sr., and the late Louise Elizabeth Riggan Jordan. He grew up in Auburn, Alabama and Tallahassee, Florida. He served in the U.S. Air Force from1956 until 1960 in military intelligence. Stationed in England, he backpacked and hitchhiked in Western Europe, developing a love for travel.
Hank majored in History at Florida State University, where he received a B.A. degree (1963) and an M.A. degree (1964). He taught History at Auburn University from 1965-1966, then joined the staff of the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh in 1968 and was appointed editor of the Archive's Civil War Roster Project in 1970. Over thirty-four years, he published twelve volumes of North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster, containing the service records of thousands of North Carolina Civil War soldiers and their unit histories. Upon his retirement in February 2004, he was inducted into the State of North Carolina's Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
Hank was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh.
He is survived by two daughters, Susannah Page Jordan and Claire Louise Jordan; a sister, Elizabeth Haynes Jordan Markowski; a brother, William Royster Jordan; two grandsons, Benjamin Alexander Marzec and Caleb Tyree Jordan; and five nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the North Carolina Symphony.
Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh is serving the Jordan family.
