David Alan Brokaw II, age 62, of Austintown, passed away on February 20, 2026, following a courageous battle with a series of illnesses related to CLL—a diagnosis he had remarkably triumphed over since 2015.
David was born on March 25, 1963, in Ravenna, Ohio to David Alan Sr. and Alma J. (Rogers) Brokaw.
Growing up, David worked on the family farm and from an early age enjoyed learning mechanics from his father. He was always out in the garage working on a motor or some other project. During high school at Southeast High School, David also enjoyed singing in the choir and playing in the marching band.
After graduating in 1981, David spent 38 years as a semi-truck driver for various local companies, including Livi Steel, Front Street Trucking, Aetna, Grant Street Services, and Reagan Trucking. He took immense pride in the "old school" era of trucking—navigating difficult loads and mechanical breakdowns, navigating without GPS and ensuring every delivery was safe, but fast. He famously joked that his truck "never went under 80."
After a diagnosis of CLL in 2015, David had to give up the fast pace trucking he loved so much, but always kept busy. He was always fixing something, making it better or building something new. Family and friends knew David could do “just about anything,” and he did it well. He could roof, build, weld, work on cars and motorcycles; but he also loved cooking, grilling, and coming up with new sauces for his barbeque. David was a skilled problem solver, project planner, and never backed down from something that seemed impossible or hard.
In the summer, David most enjoyed riding his motorcycle and being a part of Unity in the Community (UITC), a Youngstown-based motorcycle group, that combined his love for riding with his desire to help others through charity runs.
Although he called himself a “Lone Wolf,” he deeply enjoyed being a part of an organization that he believed in.
He was also a member of the Encounter Church in Youngstown, where he enjoyed camaraderie, fellowship and making his favorite dishes for the monthly community dinners.
David’s most recent hobby was photography. He had just bought a camera and was very interested in getting into wedding and landscape photography.
With all of his talents, David most seemed to love helping others. The minute someone was in need, he would jump up, load his truck, and be over to help them - whether it was with his lawn mower, tools, trailer or motorcycle.
David is survived by his beloved wife Joanna Larson, his sons: David Alan Brokaw III, Jonathan Brokaw, and Michael Brokaw, his grandchildren: Tara Haser, Riley and Danika Brokaw. As well as his sister Bonnie Myers, his brother Ray (Theresa) Brokaw, along with generations of loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his infant brother Ronald Lee Brokaw.
A committal service will take place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the Palmyra West Cemetery Chapel, 9157 Tallmadge Rd. Diamond OH 44412. A celebration of life will be held in the spring or summer.
