

He was born July 30, 1920, in Ravenna, son of the late Guy and Grace (nee Sicuro) Tontimonia. John was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church, 1938 graduate of Ravenna High School, and a WWII Veteran, serving in the US Navy. Mr. Tontimonia worked as an insurance agent with Metropolitan Life Insurance in Ravenna.
He was a loving family man and also dedicated to his community. John served Ravenna’s Ward 1 as City Councilman for four decades. Mr. Tontimonia was first elected in 1966 and was known for his honesty and dedication to his constituents. He was instrumental in many issues facing the city including the creation of the water treatment plant, creation of Havre Park, the incorporation of land that became the Maplewood Career Center, the expansion of city hall, and the new Recreational Activity Center.
In 2005, he was presented with a Public Service Award and key to the city. Also, Ravenna renamed the city park on Oakwood Street as John Tontimonia City Park, and he received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Survivors include his daughter: Bennie Bregant Rock and son: Guy Tontimonia; grandchildren: Jennifer (Cyle) Feldman, Billy (Missy) Bregant; great-grandchildren: Nicholas Shellhorn, Kendall Feldman, Carter Bregant, and Myla Bregant.
John was preceded in death by his wife Judith (DeAngelis) Tontimonia, his sister Virginia, and his brothers Mike and Sunday.
Friends will be received Tuesday, September 14, 2010, from 4-7 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. A celebration of Mr. Tontimonia’s life will follow at 7:00 PM on Tuesday. Private family services will be held with entombment at St. Mary Cemetery.
