Dear Dad, When you passed away it seemed as if time stood still up until yesterday. Another day would pass and it would be like the day before....still missing you.  What a year it has been. It feels as if just yesterday we were together...oh how I miss you.  Somehow 2011 arrived and I found myself feeling such sadness. The first new year you wouldn't see. I was caught off guard with the feeling that somehow with or without you time moves on.  It just was another one of those moments where life grabs you like a winderstorm and you can barely hold on while you feel like the breath within you is being sucked out.  That sudden feeling that for a moment you can't breath. This happens during those times when you are really missed...during holidays...celebration of a birthday....entering a new year..etc. I know we have to figure out how we do this thing of living without you, but I just don't want to do it. How can it be that your timeclock no longer ticks? I wish you were here. Luke is getting so big. You would enjoy all the things he is doing and ways he is growing. How unfair that his time with you was so limited. Just breath I say to myself and keep moving on, but instead of moving forward I want to move back. I want the clock to turn counter and the counter to stop to when you were here, but I know that is impossible. I know if you were here you would encourage us all to enjoy every moment. Time is the most precious gift, but it's pace is too fast for me.I miss you Dad....I miss saying your name....your silly smile.....your slippers full of holes.....the way you walked with the sideward sway.....My Happy New Year isn't quite Happy without you, but I will keep my chin up and look forward to memories in the making knowing that is what you would want me to do....It is a New Year, but I would take an old one if I could....

Hi Dad, We planted an apple tree in memory of you on father's day.  I thought it would be the perfect tree because it reminded me of how you baked apple pies every Thanksgiving and because of the fruit orchad you planted at our home on 44. Maybe we will bake apple pies from it one day.  For now I just look at it and think of you.  Since I can't talk with you just think I will drop a note every now and then to you here.  I love you and miss you terribly.

Hi Dad....today is a hard day for me.  I am missing you more than ever.  My heart breaks for mom.......what do you say to someone that has spent their life with someone since age 15?  Dealing with my sadness is one thing, but I can't do anything for mom, but listen.  I know that you were with us so much longer than you probably should have been with all your health problems.  I wish that you had been feeling better the last few years.  I know there were things you wanted to do.  I am so glad we had the chance to plant a garden together last year.   You wanted me to learn the right way....making sure that I planted everything in a straight line.  I didn't want you to go.....I knew the day would come sooner than later, but I wish I just had a little more time with you although I could never have had enough.  The silliest things make me cry.......the four gallons of ice cream in the freezer (you always bought too many)...making coffee and thinking about not ever having the god awful strong coffee you made......your chili...the secret recipe.........I miss you Dad....my heart is breaking thinking that I might not ever see you again.......you told me that you had such a strong faith.......I hope you were right and that maybe there is something more after all of this........you were such a good dad....thanks for coaching and going to all of my softball games....you were such a good provider....you worked too much in your life......thank you for sacrificing to take care of us........I always believed there wasn't a question you couldn't answer or something broken you couldn't fix.  I want you back.  At 59 you still got up on Saturday morning eating your Sugarcrisp and watching Spongebob Square Pants.  You knew every word to that silly song.  You taught me about laughter and having fun and that you don't have to grow up if you don't want to.  I wish I could hug your big old belly and give you a kiss.  I love you Dad.  I miss you........................

None of this makes sense now and most likely you will wonder "WHY" for a very long time. I wish I could say that it gets easier...it does not but that tells you just how much he meant to you. Linda, I am so sorry to hear that you have lost the love of your life. I am so glad I got to see the two of you at our high school reunion last year. It's funny what we remember, but I remember Leonard and you in 6th grade. Don't ask me why - that just stands out in my head. Also, I'll never forget the great barbeque and hayride we had at your house for one of our "unofficial" class reunions. I remember Leonard baking about 1,000 potatoes in the oven! I have very fond memories of the welcoming, warmth around your kitchen table and the love that you showed to everyone who entered your home.  Lenny was a wonderful part of that atmosphere.  He was a wise, caring man who turned past challenges into strengths.  His patience and nurturing were truly a gift to foster kids as well as to everyone in my family.  He was an advocate for kids and someone you could count on in tough times.  I am very grateful to have known Lenny as well as all of you. Last night I went out to the garage and just sat and cried for awhile.  Looking at all of your stuff....the silly farmer hat you wore while putzing with things.  The browns hard hat you kept hanging all the wall just to drive Marty nuts.  Duct tape....well you LOVED it.  You use to say duct tape fixes everything. I wish you were here so you could wrap me with it so I wouldn't feel so broken. I sat on your lawnmower cushion which was also wrapped with duct tape thinking about the american flag you attached to the mower just to show your patriotic spirit.  You were full of spirit and life and laughter and love.  What will I do without you?  Who will call me munchkin?  The last thing I said to you was "I love you Dad".  Thank you for being the best DAD a kid could ever have. I miss you.  Today, your overalls hang on the hook at the entrance way, just wish I could see you in them one last time.  I LOVE YOU....and don't worry...we will take care of mom and baxter.  When Luke is older I will tell him all about you.  Just wish he had more time with you and me too.
