Bud was born July 21, 1930 in Aurora, Ohio, to Roy and Rose Marie Sommers. The family relocated to Ravenna and he graduated from Ravenna Township High School. There he met, and later married, his high school sweetheart, Mayzie Lerch. He was a member of the football and basketball teams, and she was a cheerleader. Mayzie has been his life-long cheerleader with their motto being “Nothing is Impossible. They have been happily married for 62 years.
He retired from the Ruhlin Company as project superintendent building bridges and buildings. As a hobby, he built homes for his family to live in comfortably. He also restored two Queen Anne Victorian homes in Rootstown and Hudson, where they resided for many years. Bud was also proud to have earned his private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying. Mr. and Mrs. Sommers wintered in their condo in Ormond Beach, Florida for the past 10 years.
Bud could be best described as being a devoted husband and father who cherished his family. He was hard-working, kind, and fair, always putting other’s needs ahead of his own. He had a great sense of humor and was an all around great man, but he would never tell you that. His courage has been an inspiration to all of us, and he will be fondly remembered by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Mayzie; his children: Judy (Mike) Brode of Hudson, OH, Vern (Susan) Sommers of Zeeland, MI, and Sherri (Lee) Limon of Palm Coast, FL; grandchildren: Jennifer (John) Conrad, Jared (Holly) Brode, Renée (Fiancée Paul Beagle) Sommers, Clayton Sommers, Trey Sommers, Ryan Tasseff, Emily (James) Tasseff, Hannah Tasseff, Brennan Tasseff; great-grandchildren: Morgan Conrad, Paige Conrad, and Reagan Brode.
