On December 12, 2020, just shy of 71 years of marriage, Robert and Henrietta Mills took their final breaths together and passed peacefully holding hands at Raulston Hospital in Okeechobee, Florida. They ended their love story with not ever having to live a day separate from the other.
Robert and Henrietta were from Oakland and Lochlynn, Maryland (high school sweethearts) before they moved to Ohio in 1954. Robert D. Mills was born November 17, 1932 to Arthur Dwight and Carolyn E. Mills. Henrietta (Weeks) Mills was born April 12, 1932 to Ira Wheat and Elma Naomi Weeks. They were married on January 29, 1950.
Together, they raised nine children, Carol (Tom) Piacella, Janice (David) Simyak, Robert Jr. (Karen) Mills,
Becky (Ben) Sweatland, Patty (Rick) Hunter, Kenny (Katrina 9-25-09), Susie (Curt) Mordew, Paul Mills, Cyndi (Tim) Popson. From there, their family has expanded to 28 grandchildren (Marc Simyak 8-11-18) and 16 spouses, 66 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren with 3 more on the way. Of these, 5 who serve or have served in the armed forces.
Robert is survived by two brothers, their spouses and family. Henrietta is survived by two sisters, two brothers, their spouses and family. They valued faith and their family above all. They attended Ravenna Assembly of God and Northgate Church.
Robert and Henrietta for many years raised their family on Rob-Etta Dairy Farms. After selling the farm in 1976 they started “Sergeant Bob’s CB and Four Wheel Drive Shop.” They later went on to start their own fishing charter -“Papa’s Dream” on Lake Erie. And later Robert retired from Milk Marketing in 1998.
Through the years he was a youth pastor, served in the National Guard, carpenter and has enjoyed many past times-fishing on Lake Erie, family hunting trips, camping, but above all, his love for golf. He was a mentor to many and enjoyed playing the game with his children, grandchildren and friends. From the golf league he organized to golf outings he always wanted to be on the green.
Henrietta, the purest soul, valued her faith, marriage, and family. Everywhere she went she gave God the glory and tried to plant the seed of faith in those who listened. She enjoyed making her famous banana nut bars and biscuits and gravy, gardening, canning, watching Jimmy Swaggart, embroidering pillowcases for her family members and being around her children and grandchildren.
Robert and Henrietta were the roots that held together their family tree. They believed in the love of family – from many years of family vacations, numerous holiday get-togethers and reunions to watch parties to cheer on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
For the last 21 years, they spent their winters in Okeechobee, Florida. They spent many days fishing out on Lake Okeechobee, riding three wheel bikes and hosting family and friends at their home.
They renewed their 70th wedding vows in Okeechobee on 1/29/20. This January, they would have been married 71 years.
