

He was born January 24, 1949, in Grandview, Tennessee, to parents Claude D. and Ellen L. (Dye) Mathis. He was affectionately known as “Will” to his family and friends. Will graduated from Rootstown High School in 1968. Then he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War.
He was a fabricator and owner of Mathis Welding and Machine. Will was a devoted Christian and member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He loved to sing and listen to music, especially bluegrass Gospel.
Will also loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Above all, he loved his family.
Will is survived by his beloved wife Nancy (Burkett) Mathis, who he married on April 25, 1970. He is also survived by his son William R. (Hollie) Mathis, his daughter Tami J. Cieplinski, his grandchildren: David S. Cieplinski, William C. Mathis, Amber M. Cieplinski, and Jennifer L. Cieplinski, as well as his sisters: Jane Woodburn, Mary Priest, and Kathy Whittaker, along with generations of nieces and nephews.
Will was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Evelyn Leech, Rose Smith, Gilbert Mathis, and Danny Mathis.
Friends and family will be received Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, where services will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow with military honors at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
