Sister Mary Christine Mitchell

Sister Mary Christine (Mildred) Mitchell, a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, died on October 15, 2011, at the age of 93 in the 69th year of her religious life. She was born on March 20, 1918, in Columbus, Ohio, the fourth in a family of six children. Sister Mary Christine is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Anna (Seufert) Mitchell, two brothers Arthur and James and her sister Dorothy. Her passing is mourned by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, her two sisters Mrs. Pauline (Polly) Masters Hemmer (Paul) and Sister Annrita, RSM, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sister Mary Christine taught in various schools: St. Robert Bellarmine and Notre Dame High School in Chicago, IL; St. Patrick, and St. Joseph Academy in Columbus OH; St. Xavier Commercial in Cincinnati OH and Notre Dame High School in Hamilton OH. In 1969 she began her years of service in the provincial offices as provincial secretary. She completed her service in the ministry of prayer and communication at Mount Notre Dame Health Center.

Sister Mary Christine was known for her keen sense of humor and her attentiveness to written and phone presence, especially to missionaries and to shut-ins and others who benefitted from her frequent calls and notes. She was dedicated to the good of her religious community and through her communication and personal interest was continually involved in building and strengthening unity. In addition to her religious community, she was devoted to her family, especially to her sister Polly and to Sister Annrita, a Sister of Mercy. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will take place on Friday, October 21, 2011, at 1:30 – 2:45 at Mount Notre Dame Health Center, 699 E. Columbia Avenue, Cincinnati (513-821-7448), followed by the Mass of Christian burial at 3:00 and interment after the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Retirement Fund of the Sisters of Notre Dame, 701 E. Columbia Avenue, Cincinnati OH 45215. Funeral arrangements: Schmidt-Dhonau-Kucner Funeral Home.
