Tony was born on June 10, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York to Anthony and Constance Varanouskas. Tony joined the United States Air Force, where he served his country for many years and earned the rank of Sergeant. Tony met his loving wife, Ernestine Trott, at a USO Dance while serving in the air force and they happily married in 1954. The two started a family together in Astoria, New York, and moved to Jericho, New York where Tony established himself as a prominent business owner of the Wantagh Car Care Center. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ernestine, in 1981.
In 1982, Tony married Barbara Shaffer. Together, they enjoyed many cruises, traveling to different areas across the country, and spending time visiting their children and grandchildren. The two lived together in Florida, where they enjoyed beach life and the relaxing views of the Intracoastal Waterway. Over the recent years, Tony and Barbara moved to Pennsylvania to be closer to family.
For Tony, his family was his entire world. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to so many.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his sister Marianne; his children and their spouses, Deborah and Peter Cooney, Paul and Colette Varanouskas; Sue and Rick Vivaldi, Donna and Richard Cerreta, Cindy and Doug Veritgan, Tarrie Vogel; his grandchildren, Caitlin Cooney, Megan Cooney and her husband Joshua Smith, Timothy Burger, Jeff Berg, Ricky and Megan Cerreta, Christina and Jason Scheuring, Jason and Amanda Vogel, and Gregory and Kayla Vogel. He is further survived by many great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
To quote Frank Sinatra, one of Tony’s favorite singers: “I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried. I’ve had my fill my share of losing…I did it my way.”
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Tony’s memory to either the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the American Parkinson Disease Association.
