

Ethel remained at home to care for her mother, who suffered from juvenile arthritis and died in 1963, and her father, until his death in 1971. She lived in the Reading area before moving to Bloomsburg, Pa., in 2002.
She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church and was employed by Reading Optical Company as an office clerk for 42 1/2 years, retiring in 1977.
As a young adult, Ethel enjoyed summer vacations at Camp Karamac, Delaware Water Gap, Pa. She traveled throughout the U.S. from coast to coast and toured Austria, Germany and Switzerland. She also visited the Bahamas, Cuba twice, Hawaii, Mexico, Nova Scotia, Panama and Quebec.
She is survived by nieces and nephews: Gayle E. Hartz of Albany, N.Y.; John B. Hartz and wife, Deborah, of Rensselaer, N.Y.; Jan Putney of Phoenix, Ariz.; and John C. Penman and wife, Grace, of Bloomsburg, Pa. She is also survived by numerous second, third and fourth generation nieces and nephews.
Ethel was also predeceased by siblings, Grace E. Penman and John D. Hartz; and nephew, Edward H. Kalbach.
Services will be Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 11 a.m. in Theo C. Auman Funeral Home, 247 Penn St., Reading. Burial to follow in Laureldale Cemetery. A viewing will be Saturday, 10:30-11 a.m. in the funeral home.
