Hazel Anderson, affectionately called Aunt Hazel, Mama was born in 1929 to the late father, Theophilus Anderson who was a District Constable, Pioneer Farmer and Deacon of the Tweedside Baptist Church, Clarendon, Jamaica. Daughter of the late Theresa Anderson, who was a Midwife, also of Tweedside, Clarendon, Jamaica, passed away to her Lord and Saviour on Sunday October 27, 2024. Hazel was the sixth of eight (8) children.
Hazel attended Tweedside Primary School and went on to learn dressmaking. She relocated to St. Thomas, Jamaica as a young adult, where sewing became her livelihood. She worked with the Yallahs Secondary School, St. Thomas, Jamaica in 1976 to 1989 as a Custodian.
She migrated to the United States in 1989 and worked at the Reading Hospital, Sheraton Hotel and was later employed at Country Meadows Retirement Community of Wyomissing, PA for seventeen (17) years in the housekeeping and dining room department. Hazel was awarded the certificate of honor of excellence on January 19, 2006 by Michael Leader, the chief operating officer of Country Meadows Retirement Community. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Church of God, 130 W. Buttonwood Street, Reading, PA under the leadership of Pastor Robert Brookins.
After her retirement, she enjoyed reading her Bible daily, sitting on her porch, and conversing with her neighbors and passersby.
Hazel was a single mother with seven (7) children (one (1) deceased, Dorothy). She survived by her six (6) remaining children, Cocheta Setalsingh, Joan (Babysingh) Wilson (Setalsingh) husband Noah, Delzine (Annette), Young, Winsome Phillips, Stephen Phillips wife Tanieka, Godfrey (Maida) Phillips; all of Reading PA.
She also leaves behind one stepdaughter, Barbara (Sissy) Setalsingh and step-grandson, eleven (11) grandchildren and six (6) great grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, relatives and wonderful friends.
A viewing for Hazel will be held Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church of God, 130 W. Buttonwood St, Reading, PA 19601, followed by A Celebration of Life Service at 10:00 AM. Hazel will be laid to rest in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
