He moved to Reading, Pa., at an early age with his 3 sisters: Jacqueline, Louise and Hattie. He was educated in the Reading School System. After his schooling he was employed at the former Abraham Lincoln Hotel as a chef.
In 1947 he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army for 4 years and was given an honorable discharge. After his service he returned to Reading and began working at the Birdsboro Steel Mill.
During this time he married the love of his life, Stella. From this union they were blessed with two children, daughter, Renee S. Tames, widow of Gerald H Tames Jr., of Bernville, and son, Leland G. Williams Jr. and his wife, Delvonnya, of Reading; and proud grandfather of 3: Leland G. Williams III, Shantaiva Williams and Lakim Moseley. Also surviving is his sister, Jacqueline Williams of Reading.
As the work at the steel mill slowed, Deacon Williams returned to the former Abraham Lincoln Hotel. Wanting more for his family, he choose employment at the Carpenter Steel Co., where he rose to department foreman and after 29 years he retired.
Deacon Williams became part of the Zion Family early in his married life. He has served and was a celebrated member and servant for over 50 years. He enjoyed serving the church and being a member in many different capacities which include: the church choir, sharing his culinary expertise with the Hospitality Ministry, Male Chorus, a member of the Central PA Men's Singing Association, member of the Missionary Ministry and as a trustee. He enjoyed serving others. His most satisfying endeavor is one when he began his walk to become a deacon of the church. His quiet nature and love for his fellow man is evident in everything he does.
Deacon Williams' favorite scripture is Psalms 18:2, The Lord is my rock and fortress and my deliverer. My God, My Rock in whom I take refuge, My Shield and the Horn of my Salvation, my Stronghold.
Deacon Williams has truly done what his favorite song says: I Want Jesus to Walk With Me.
