Yet another member of our country's 'Greatest Generation' has left us. After growing up in the aftermath of the Great Depression, Bill enlisted in the Army in his late teens and spent time overseas in Germany as an MP helping to keep order as Germany rebuilt after WWll. Upon his discharge, he worked in the oil fields of Southern California. He had a strong desire his children be raised in the country so he moved his family to Chico where he became a truck driver for Miller's Markets. Most of his working life, Bill drove trucks.Upon retirement, he enjoyed road trips to Alaska and Mexico with the trailer; camping, deer hunting and being with his family and friends. He was very patriotic and especially loved the annual 'Mistletoe Salutes America' Veteran's day program, which was the highlight of his year! He loved how the children honored vets with music and poetry, and how much they appreciated our men and women who serve. He enjoyed coffee with his veteran friends right up to a few days before he passed.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother Lillian, brothers Herb, and Ralph Avie, survived by his daughters, Kathy, Judy and Leanora, along with the children gifted to him (by marriage to his late wife Sybill); Michael, Donna, Dennie, and Diane. Bill leaves behind his sweetheart and companion of 15 years Neoma Powers. He was a grandfather and great-grandfather to many blessed children whose lives are richer because of the love he so freely gave them.
He will be sorely missed by all.A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Saturday April 11, at 11:00 am at Lawncrest Chapel, 1522 E. Cypress Avenue, Redding, CA 96002. In lieu of flowers, he requested donations in his memory be sent to his favorite charities: The Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org 877-958-2233), and/or Make a Wish of Northeastern California, 2800 Club Center Drive, Sacramento, CA 95835, (916) 437-0206.
