Clayton Harter, 90, passed away on July 7, 2013 in Redding, CA. Clayton was born to Cora A. Harter and William M. Harter on August 18, 1922 in Slatington, PA. He was born in a lovely farming community. He grew to be a fine young boy, but decided that farming wasn't for him. He was inducted in the Army November 28, 1942. Dad saw a lot of action during his time in the Army; his field was Radios. He was discharged April 16, 1946 as SSGT.
Dad met his bride Esther in Redding during the war at the USO dance. They married October 8, 1946 and were married for 67 years. They had a floor covering business for almost 30 years. They both worked very hard and did it by themselves. They had 3 children, all were college educated; this was important to them. Pam, Dennis and Jeff were given everything their parents didn't have.
Clay and Esther retired and had several rentals they acquired to provide them their retirement. It was May 18, 1995 that changed both of their lives. Dad was up on a roof of a rental and took a fall, leaving him paralyzed on his right side. He proved his doctor wrong and with his hard work in Rehab Hospital has been shuffling around. This was the end of Dad's love for fishing. Mom has always been there to support her husband and our dad.
On Thursday, Dad would rally and play cards with his friends at the Elks Lodge, have dinner with other friends and have a great time.
Dad lived out his life in Oakdale Heights. He had a great attitude about his stay. He seemed to like it there-very nice staff!
Dad loved fishing in Trinidad and spent time at the summer home in Old Station. He was a manager for some time at the Elks Lodge, Trustee and lifetime member. Clayton participated as Assistant Boy Scout Master for 10 years; this was very gratifying to him with his two boys. Mom and Dad traveled many different places in their RV with friends and had many fond memories. Canada, Branson, New Orleans and Mexico. They have had many lovely celebrations.
Our Dad will be missed by his family and friends; his beloved wife, Esther Harter; daughter, Pam Harlow (Gary); son, Dennis Harter (Ann) of Santa Rosa; son, Jeff Harter (Tanya) of Chico; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on July 20, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial following at the Catholic Cemetery. Reception at Redding Elks Lodge at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the St. Joseph Church and School.
