Clifford "Wayne" Carlin passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 27, 2016 after a long battle with ailments stemming from diabetes he was 73 years old.
Wayne was born to Rea and Mabel Carlin on January 20, 1943 in Weed, CA. He had 4 brothers, Keith Malohn, Junior, Johnny and William and 1 sister Rita.
Wayne's parents Rea & Mabel moved from Illinois after the death of their three month old son Johnny settling in Weed, Ca. Wayne was the first of their children to be born in California. Poor health issues forced the family to move from the Mt. Shasta area settling them in Redding California where Wayne attended Pacheco Elementary and graduated from Anderson High School. Meeting his future wife Margaret who was 6 years younger, the Carlin and Stoddard family formed bonds. Wayne's mother passed in 1962, Wayne turned to the Catholic faith while helping to support his family. Studying to become a Priest, during the height of the Vietnam War, he chose to enlist in the Army only a week before receiving his draft papers. Training in Oahu HI, then deploying to Vietnam, Wayne served his tour as a Heavy Weapon’s Inf man. Returning home a decorated Veteran, he received metals for the following; Sharpshooter (Rifle M-14), Vietnam Service Medals, National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, one overseas bar.
He rekindled his love with Margaret and they were wed in Reno NV June 10, 1967. The following year his first born was born March 31, 1968; Margaret "Lynn." Settling in Redding the couple shared a home with his brother Junior and father Rea. In 1974, their second child was born, Debra Faye. Wayne was a hard dedicated worker holding jobs with Shasta Nursery, Pinkerton Security than the last 30 years before retirement with the Federal Government, head of security for Shasta Dam.
Known for his great since of humor, his friends and family will cherish the way he could crack "one liners" make goofy faces and make everyone around him happy. He was a kind and gentle soul who loved and lived life to the fullest and had a way of making you look at things differently; a trait his offspring proudly carry on.
Wayne and Margaret enjoyed retirement together spending most of their time with their five grandchildren; Shelby and Sierra Petrie (Lynn's children); Amanda, Jeremy and Cheyanne Helmey (Debra's children). When not with their grandchildren, they enjoyed their days playing music with their band entertaining local residents with their passion for music. Wayne played in several bands over his life time, he was an amazing Base player. Wayne was a skilled fly fisherman who lived for the fight of hooking and reeling in the catch of the day mostly by the flies he tied himself then telling the "fishing stories" that eventually grew larger than his catch! Sharing his passions with his girls and grandchildren, he was proud to of passed on his love and patriotism for his Country, playing music, the great outdoors and traveling.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, cousins and siblings being the last to carry on the Carlin name in California.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Margaret. He is also survived by Daughter Lynn Petrie (Michael) 2 granddaughters, Shelby Petrie of Reno NV; and Sierra Petrie of Brentwood CA; daughter, Debra Helmey (Chris) of Anderson; 3 Grandchildren, Amanda, Jeremy and Cheyanne. Nieces Robin and Mariah Stallcup of Marysville, Ca. Genita Charles of Clear Lake, nephew Matthew Holden (Stephanie) and son Nehemiah of N.C.
