“Bob”
May 27, 1915
January 31, 2011
Bob was born on May 27, 1915, in Woodland, CA, to John William “Jack” Lider and Amelia “Millie” Francis Scoggins Lider. Grandson of Johann August Wilhelm Leuter (Aka William John Lider) and Dorothea Sofia Fredericka Stein Lider (Aka Fredericka lider). One of seven children, 4 preceding him in death (Bill, John, Ruth, and Jim), survived by sister Virginia Busteed of Seattle, WA and brother, Lloyd Lider and wife Isabella, of Medford, Oregon.
Bob met Bessie May Taber on a nearby ranch during almond season but the two truly began to notice each other in high school. They both graduated from Esparto Union High School in 1935.
After much planning and delays for their wedding, the couple felt they had waited long enough and on December 23, 1938 they eloped, marrying in Carson City, Nevada, later telling their parents and family.
Though Bob worked at Standard Oil before their marriage, and for an American company that made ceremic bathroom fixtures after their marriage, growing up on a ranch he had the outdoors in his blood.
He joined the agriculture team at the University of California at Davis (UCD), learning about many types of plants as well as chemicals. He learned to speak Spanish fluently, which was needed for supervising in the field and he often monitored University classes for more knowledge. He retired as the Principal Field Superintendent of Cultivation, on the same day in 1972, as Bessie retired as a Laboratory Assistant from the Agronomy Laboratory.
After retirement Bob and Bessie spent much of their time at the Shingletown property they purchased in 1968, as a home base for their RV travels. During their travels they were able to pass through every state in the U.S., including two trips to Alaska (one in 1966 when their son John was stationed there, and again in 1974), one trip to Hawaii in 2002 and a Norweigen Sun Panama Canal Cruise in 2003.
Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman and often recalled hunting for bear, moose, and caribou in Alaska. He was a lifetime member of the American Rifle Association, as well as the RV’ers Escapee Club, joining in 1986.
Bob acted as consultant after retirement to the family business, Lider Ranches, in Zamora, CA, as well as Manton Vineyards in Manton, CA. He helped design and maintain a seedless grape vineyard and fruit tree orchard in Bella Vista, CA “Eden Vineyards”. There they taught their daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren how to garden, prune grapes and even how to make raisins. The pool used for frost control for the vineyard was always a big hit for the whole family, and a nice place to cool off after working in the vineyard for hours. Bob and his family sold seedless grapes at Four Corners (Old Oregon Trail and Old Alturas Road) for many years during harvest season. He also helped design and plant the beautiful garden at River Oaks Retirement Community, where they have resided for over 12 years before Bob moved to “A Brand New Day” an Alzehemer’s Care home in August 2010. He was able to visit and enjoy that garden once again on Wednesday before his death, seeing the Iris blooming in January was a real treat for him!
Bob’s wit, intelligence, plant knowledge, and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all that met him.
Bob is survived by his wife of 72 years, Bessie Taber Lider.
