Gloria was born in Claremont, South Dakota, on April 8, 1928 to Frances, a homemaker, and Alphonse Riedmiller, a Great Northern Railroad Depot agent and Telegrapher.
In 1936 her mother, older brother Tony and she moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon. In 1942 they moved to Hat Creek and then Redding.
Gloria attended Shasta High School and was employed at the Cascade Theater for 4 years working up to lead cashier her senior year. She graduated in 1946 and then went to work for the Bell Telephone Company as a Long Distance Telephone Operator.
In 1946 she met and married Carrol Halcomb (home from 5. 5 years in the Army). He worked at the Bureau of Reclamation as First Aide Instructor and Inspector. Gloria was hired as Clerk-Typist and Telephone Operator. Later the Bureau installed a large PBX telephone switch board assigning Gloria as the operator handling all incoming and outgoing calls for Keswick and Shasta Dam Projects, inter-office calls, Toyon office, and all calls incoming from Washington, D.C. Department of Interior to the engineer on the project at Shasta Dam. She loved her job, but became a homemaker when their first child was born.
As Carrol was a Pearl Harbor Survivor, Gloria and he partook in years of events and monthly luncheons. Gloria enjoyed calling members to remind them of upcoming meetings. Carrol and Gloria loved traveling with the Mt. Lassen Motor Transit for 40 years. They also experienced many trips to the coast in search of agates, shells, and glass Japanese fishing floats. They traveled to flea markets where she collected crackle glass.
Gloria enjoyed gardening, crocheting, painting pottery, and playing cards. She had a love of animals from dogs to feeding the birds and the squirrels in her back yard.
Gloria loved exercising, walking 3 miles a day for 36 years After open heart surgery she joined Shasta Regional Medical Center Cardiac Rehab.
Gloria excelled at caring for others, expressing kindness and compassion. She supported soldiers during WWII by writing letters to them.
Carrol passed in 2012 after 65.5 years of marriage. Family included: son Greg (Pam), daughter Vickie (Jim) King and 4 grandchildren: Scott Goble and Ryan Goble, Laura Halcomb (Ben Hubbell) and Sarah (LaVance) Thompson and 1 great-granddaughter: Tia Thompson.
