Dear "Grandpa",

     It has been almost one month since you left us. Sometimes it is still difficult to believe you are gone. We have so many good memories. We enjoy reminiscing as we share our many photos and memories of you. Even though they can, and do, bring tears of sadness at missing you, we often remember something you said or did and we end up laughing. We know we will all be together again one day. Heaven will be so amazing!
     
     Thank you for being such a wonderful step-father. I know that you did not care much for that title. You knew that I did not share your perspective. You were the only step-father I have ever had. Therefore, from my view, it was a very positive term. You were a great dad, a man of such integrity. I appreciate the special memories and father/daughter moments we shared. It was a privilege for me to be one of the bridesmaids when you and Mom were married. Then you were the one who gave me away at Glenn's and my wedding. I remember the trip to Tennessee with you, Mom, and Aunt Tina. You wanted to conquer the road! I wanted to stop at every pay phone I saw so could talk to Glenn!
     
     Glenn and I were amazed that each time we moved, you cleaned, unpacked boxes, prepared meals and helped clean things up again. You did that all three times we moved! You chopped wood, raked, and helped with our home remodeling/construction and clean-up. He also enjoyed having another man to visit with.
     
     You were such an awesome Grandpa. The children all have their special memories of Grandpa. You were fun! David, Micah, and Katie each had their own relationship with Grandpa. You did special things with each one. Thank you for all of the numerous things you did to show your love. We appreciate all of the cooking, cleaning and babysitting you and Mom did for us.      
     For years, we filled a couple of pews at church. We loved sitting together. The children could count on Grandpa to offer mints during the Sunday sermon. We could count on you to correct them if they got too noisy or wiggly. After church, we often enjoyed getting together for bar-be-ques, lunches out, and visiting. Then you and Grandma would most-likely have an extra passenger whom you had invited to spend the day and maybe even overnight at Grandma and Grandpas house.
 
     It was a joy to watch you grow in your faith. It was special to watch your baptism, when you publicly declared your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior!
     You were so good to our mother for all those years! We are doing our best to take care of her. We know she loved you and misses you very much, as we all do.
     
     We are all very grateful that God saw fit to grant our requests for you to live longer when you were so sick a few years back. We were grateful to have you in our lives for a few more years.
     We appreciate all that you have meant to us all of these years. I just want to say it again. Thank you! Thank you for all the time you spent with us! Thank you for all that you have done for us! Jesus said, "The greatest in the kingdom is the servant of all." Thank you for leading by example. And thank you for leaving a legacy of servanthood.

Although I really wish I could be there in person as we remember grandpa, this letter will have to suffice. I really treasure the time I spent with him this past spring from just spending time together to being able to drive his truck under my own driver’s license to getting my hair cut to Grandpa’s specifications to being with the family at “Hogs Town”.

Where to start. Well I guess I can start by saying memories.  One of my earliest memories of him was cutting firewood out by the shed. When I grew a little bit older I remember planting the redwoods that you see in my parents driveway with him. From that point was my first recollection of a friendship starting. He was my best friend. I was his buddy and we went on adventures. One of my favorites was our trips to go feed the ducks and geese. One day a goose tried to attack me for bread, grandpa who wasn’t going to let it happen shouted out “DAMN DUCK” and kicked that sucker back. Grandpa was feisty. And apparently he was feistier than the Goose because it proceeded to leaving me alone. I Remember the rides in his truck. That thing was his pride. He had to have a truck.  

Amongst my many memories of him are the stories he told me. From his grad night adventures to his waking up to find a Monkey girl at the edge of his bed. I was never left bored when he had finished telling a story. 
I found myself trying to find him toys that he used to play with as a child. I was only successful once when I found a little green tin soldier. I gave it to him and he loved it. Grandpa had a way of cherishing small tokens. When I was little he would give me stuff like pencils and things that he had received at conventions. 
One memory I have is walking into his little room aside from the kitchen and seeing a Elvis towel laying on the bed. When grandpa saw me looking at it he replied, “sometimes I come in and sit on Elvis’s face with my butt!” And he gave me that Cheshire cat grin which he was famous for. There was nobody like him and there will never be anyone like him.

The way to grandpas heart was tied to his stomach. You could get there by other means, but if you wanted him to think you were an alright person you had better light up the grill. I wish I had one more chance to grill some of “Grandpas Chicken”. Before I left on my trip back to Missouri from California he told me that the next time I was out there we would be grilling up some of his chicken. I wish I had the opportunity.  Well to sum the food section of my letter I guess all I have to say is Hog-Town anyone?

Grandpa had a system. There is a legend in the family that grandma could get up at 2 in the morning to go to the bathroom, come back, and the bed would be made. Well I feel that may be a little far fetched but he was a very tidy person. When I turned around 8 years old he came to my house to teach me the “military style” of making my bed. I went in my room made the bed and he pulled out a shiny quarter, He flipped the quarter onto the bed and it plopped. He said “not good enough, it didn’t bounce”. So one thing I will always be able to do is jump into gear and make my bed to military regulation.  Grandpa didn’t like the Flimsy paper plates either. He needed Dixie cardboard plates. I remember searching for things at Walmart for family get-togethers. I would be sent to get paper plates and sent back to get the “sturdy ones”. And, they had to have the three sections 

Grandpa was Sarge, BUT grandma was the General. And they nicknamed me gopher, I would “go-fer this and go-fer that.  He would call up requesting to speak to his gopher. He would then proceed telling me his plans for the week and what included me. Spending the night at Grandma and Grandpa’s was a cherished event that took place amongst us kids. If we were good and it was your turn then we were given the opportunity to go over and hang out at their house. 

Spending the night at grandpas house consisted of sitting around watching “Shoot Em Ups” as grandma called them, and for me particularly, well I was in love with the cookie jar and the Bread box. I never knew what beautiful Snackage creations awaited upon my arrival at their house. When Grandpa knew I was spending the night he would go and pick up some chocolate milk, I love that stuff! And it’s a memory that will last me forever, because a life without chocolate milk is a life without grandpa in it. And im not giving up either. 

Well My letter is coming to a close and I would just like to say that grandpa had an impact on everyone’s lives, especially mine. We are here for a short time, And grandpa was given a little extra time a few years back. I am so grateful because I couldn’t have handled not having him in my life those few crucial years. He may be gone from us now but grandpa accepted Christ. And in the recent months even became a church member of the Bowman Community Church! So one thing I know is I will be seeing him again. And I’m sure Grandpa is happy, I believe he’s raiding the heavenly cookie jar, one of his favorite things to do late night. 
Grandpa: I miss you and wish I could be hanging out with you right now, but you have been called home. While I’m still here on earth, I will honor your life by following the principals you have taught me. I will love and honor my country, I will do things the right way even if it isn’t the easy way.  And I will always… always take care of the ladies.

I was fortunate enough to have two dads, one who gave me life and you, the one who raised me.  I know that now is not the time to thank you for all that you did for me; I can only hope that I was able to express my appreciation enough over the years in my own feable way.  But I can share with others some of the memories and good times that we had together, and the interests and values that you had, and instilled in me as we both grew older.  You passed on all those fatherly things, like how to appreciate the great outdoors, how to hunt and fish, and how to drive a car.  You taught me the value of hard work, saving money, helped me open my first bank account, and how to do my taxes.  You showed me, by example, how to treat others and deal with difficult situations.  I remember the times we spent together in the basement refinishing grandmas antique organ & other furniture, or building things.  I remember the weekends on the lake, fishing out of the boat.   I remember you passing the baton on to me to trim the hedge that went half-way around the house, I hated it so much that I planted one at my own house.  I remember you trusting me to borrow your pick-up, the 68 ford 4 speed with the camper shell (a real girl magnet), before you helped me get my own (a datsun, with a camper shell).  I remember our trip to Wisconsin to visit relatives when I was 12; meeting Great Grandma Chase, driving great uncle Elmers tractor on his farm, & others.  Ironically, that’s where I was, for the first time since then, when it was time for you to leave us.  I remember you finally getting married, I was your best man, and the added joy, companionship, and love that Aunt Betty and her family brought into your life.  You see, even though we morn, we miss your laughter, your smile, your jokes, and we wish that things could once again be as they were, as long as we continue to relive and share those memories, you will always be with us.  Thanks Lyle, you will always be remembered, and I will always miss you.
