1918 - 2013
On Wednesday, November 20, 2013, our beloved mother, Violet Walters, passed away peacefully from this life into eternity.
Violet was born on March 25, 1918, in French River, Minnesota, to Erick and Maryanna Schonberg. She grew up on the family farm during the years of the Great Depression, along with her brother Sulo, and sisters Gertrude and Helene.
When she reached adulthood, Violet moved to southern California where she found employment as a cook and housekeeper. During World War II, she worked at Douglas Aircraft, and at North American Aviation. She was proud to have served as "Rosie the Riveter" along with many other women of her generation.
In 1943, she married Robert John Robinson, who was serving in the United States Navy. Violet and Robert had three children, Daniel, Jan and Mary. The family moved to Susanville, CA, in 1960, where Robert died later that year, following an illness.
In 1964, Violet married Carl Ellsworth Walters and the family relocated to Redding, where Carl found employment as a lineman for the City of Redding. Carl retired in 1986, and passed away following a long illness in 1998.
Violet continued on her own, living at home until age 95! Her family was always the center of her life, but she had many interests, which included handcrafts, ceramics, cooking, cake decorating and reading. Violet was also a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, and was a frequent diner at Shasta Senior Nutrition Center, where she made many friends.
She also loved animals, and is survived by her cats George, Miss Kitty and Tommy. Violet is also survived by her children Daniel Robinson (Frederica) of the Netherlands, Jan Robinson of San Francisco, and Mary DeStefano (Charlie) of Redding, and numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
Our dear Mother will be very deeply missed, but we are grateful for her longevity and independent spirit; her quiet, humble, unassuming ways, and her many kindnesses to her family and to all she met. She was a special, one-in-a-million mother, and we will hold her in our hearts with love, until the happy day when we will be reunited with her.
A private family service is pending at Lawncrest Chapel in Redding. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Violet's memory to Shasta Senior Nutrition Center, 100 Mercy Oaks Dr., Redding, CA 96003, or Haven Humane Society, PO Box 992202, Redding, CA 96099-2202.
