With heavy hearts and profound love, we announce the passing of Janet Marie Lewis, who entered eternal rest at the age of 90 on April 29, 2025. Born on February 2, 1935, in Placencia, California, to Thomas and Clotilda Agundez Martinez, Janet was the eldest of seven children and a cherished pillar of the Martinez family.
Raised in the serene countryside near Campbell Mountain in Reedley, Janet graduated from Reedley High School in 1953. She married the love of her life, George W. Lewis, on August 18, 1954. Together, they embarked on life’s journey with time spent in Arkansas and Missouri before returning home to Reedley, where they built their forever home on the Martinez Family Ranch—close to the family she loved so dearly.
Janet dedicated much of her life to serving others. Over the years, she worked in various roles, but found her true calling as a caregiver for individuals with intellectual disabilities. For over three decades, she offered loving care, creating a warm, supportive home environment for those she lovingly called “God’s most precious people.”
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband George, and sisters Consuelo (Connie) Banuelos and Clotilda (Vita) Martinez. She is survived by her brothers Thomas R. Martinez (Mary Lou), Leroy Martinez (Marjorie), and Dale W. Martinez (Lupe), and her sister Norma Valenzuela. She leaves behind a legacy of love that spans five generations of nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Janet had a gift for making others feel seen and valued. Every birthday was remembered and celebrated. She cultivated deep individual relationships with her family and was always present—physically and emotionally—for life’s biggest and smallest moments. Her love and hospitality were unmatched, as shown in the countless family celebrations hosted in “Uncle George’s workshop,” from weddings and graduations to reunions and homecomings.
She shared many adventures with her sister Norma and brother-in-law Danny, joined George in cross-country hauls in his big rig, and visited loved ones near and far. Janet was also an avid bowler, never missing a Thursday evening game. Bowling nights were followed by sweet treats at Perko’s or Foster Freeze, and she built life-long friendships through her league. Her high school friendships endured the years, and she delighted in attending many class reunions.
A talented crafter and crocheter, Janet gifted her handmade creations with love. We will continue watching game shows and cheering for the Dodgers in her honor, remembering the joy she brought to every room.
Janet Lewis was a guiding light in our family—steadfast, compassionate, and deeply loved. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but her legacy of love and kindness will live on in all of us.
In accordance with Janet’s wishes, memorial donations may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Church, Reedley, or to your favorite charity.
