It is with profound sorrow, yet great gratitude to God for a life well lived, that we announce the transition to glory of Dr. Chris Ekong, a distinguished Regina neurosurgeon, whose skill, generosity, and global vision transformed countless lives. He passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by excellence in medicine and unwavering commitment to God and humanity.
Dr. Ekong was born in Uyo, Nigeria. He completed his medical training at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, before moving to Canada for Neurosurgical training. He devoted his career to advancing the field of neurosurgery and providing compassionate patient-centred care. His particular dedication to spine surgery contributed significantly to improved outcomes and expanded surgical expertise in Saskatchewan.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Ekong was a philanthropist. Through his endowment with the Hospitals of Regina Foundation, he enables surgeons to acquire and refine their expertise in spine surgery. This lasting gift ensures that future generations of patients will benefit from advanced care and that surgeons will continue to build on the foundation he established.
His charitable initiatives, including C&J Ekong Charitable Foundation and Global Neurosurgery Outreach Program, created opportunities for neurosurgeons from developing countries to gain hands-on experience, advance neurosurgical skills, and gain exposure to modern techniques. He believed that access to surgical expertise should not be limited by geography and worked tirelessly to bridge gaps in global health education. Many surgeons worldwide benefited from his mentorship and generosity. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine and humanity, Dr. Ekong received several awards and honours.
He will be greatly missed, but his legacy and impact live on through his family: Jane (wife), Imo, Nse, & Ime (sons), Enobong (daughter), Ian (son-in-law), Amos & Ava (grandchildren), Ibanga (brother), Uduak & Mfon (sisters), several in-laws and numerous nieces & nephews. The surgeons he trained, the patient he helped, and the many lives he touched. He fought the good fight, finished his race, and kept the faith.
We thank the SHA doctors, nurses, and other personnel who provided him with excellent care throughout the illness. You are the best, and are very much appreciated.
Dr. Ekong’s Celebration of Live service will be held at 1 pm, on May 1st, 2026, at Celebration Church Regina, 3130 Renfrew Crescent, Regina. His remains will be interred in his hometown at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to C&J Ekong Charitable Foundation. Tax receipts will be issued.
