With sadness we announce the loss of Gerry Anne from our lives at the age of 87. Her keen intelligence, fertile imagination, curiosity, playfulness, and liberal and open-minded approach to life enriched our lives. Although her capabilities diminished towards the end of her life, Gerry Anne retained her dignity and graciousness.
Married at the young age of 19, and beginning a family near Tugaske, Gerry Anne continued to write creatively and to pursue post secondary education by correspondence. Several of her short stories for children were published. When the family moved into Regina, despite having five children at home, she grasped the opportunity to attend classes part time at the University of Regina where she achieved her BA in 1981.
An avid reader and seeker of knowledge, Gerry Anne nurtured her family’s joy in reading, adventure and learning. She poured out the richness of her intelligence in lively conversation. When unable to converse with us in person, years before social platforms like Facebook existed, she clipped and photocopied material she knew would interest each of us, stuffing individual fat brown envelopes, posting them to us regularly as absentee conversations.
Gerry Anne found joy and pride in her children and grandchildren. She leaves one daughter, Leah; one adopted daughter, Robin Smith (Stan); three sons, Bruce (Gail), Arthur (Veronica), Regan; and five grandchildren, Eric, Landon(Meghan), Brielle, Cole, and Nadine. She is also survived by two sisters, Carol Coutts, Wendie (Marc) Picot, and one brother, Stephen Atkinson; former daughter in law, Marilyn Poitras, former son in law David Jonasson, as well as extended family and friends.
Her husband of many years, H. Leonard Perlett, one five-year-old son Drew, sister and best friend Donna Atkinson, and sister in law Barb Atkinson, predeceased Gerry Anne.
Cremation will take place. There will be no service. Should friends desire, contributions could be made to Save the Children Canada.
