Harry was born on a farm near Dilke, SK on June 23, 1931. The 8th of 9 children born to Gregor and Paulina (nee Wandler) Selinger.
Harry first met Lila Fahlman on a streetcar during their high school days. It was a friendship that grew. They married 5 years later on August 8, 1955. Over the next 15 years they were blessed with 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. Harry shared almost 70 years with Lila, the love of his life.
Harry attended Two Tree Point School for Grades 1-8, then Campion High School in Regina for high school and his first year of university. He then attained his Bachelor of Education Degree at the University of Saskatchewan. Several years later, after many night and summer classes as well as a few children, he achieved his Masters in Education.
Harry started his career as a classroom teacher in a 4 room schoolhouse in Pangman, Sk. His second year was at St. Joseph School in Regina. Harry was then appointed principal at the newly constructed St. Andrew School, where he remained for 11 years. He moved to Sacred Heart School as principal for 13 years and finished the last 9 years of his career at St. Mary School.
Harry served the Regina Catholic School System for 33 years as a dedicated and highly respected administrator. He was appreciated and loved by staff, students and parents.
Harry was a sports enthusiast. He played a number of sports in school. After high school, he was a member of the Little Flower Softball Team. When those playing days were over, he remained active at the Dr. Paul Schwann Fitness Centre. Harry coached many of his children’s sports teams. He was a big fan of sport, especially the Riders, the Oilers and his grandchildren.
After retirement Harry was able to spend more time doing the things he loved – his sports pursuits (golfing, skiing) and his hobbies (gardening and upholstering/leatherwork). Harry also had much more family time. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren in his beloved garden and yard. The grandchildren will forever remember Grandpa’s garden hat, his shorts and high socks.
Harry’s life was always centered on his faith. He and Lila were very active members of Holy Cross Parish for over 50 years. It was there that they found comfort, support and their second family.
Throughout his life Harry met many people. He acquired many lifelong friendships and developed deep personal relationships. It was a good life. Harry was blessed, and we were blessed with Harry.
Harry will be remembered as a man of family and faith, a man of efficiency and fairness, as well as a man of service to others.
Godspeed Harry, we love you
