1921-2010
John passed away on May 8, 2010 at the age of 88 as the result of a heart attack. He passed peacefully with his family at his side. John was born on September 25, 1921 in Endeavor, SK and was predeceased by his parents Bill and Helen, brothers Mike and George, and is survived by his loving wife Eleanor of 67 years, brothers Joe of Ottawa, Roy of Comox, and sister Violet of Calgary.
John is also survived by five sons Dennis (Dorothy) of Guelph, Ken (Linda) of Calgary, Dave of Regina, Brian (Carol) of Regina, Phil (Pat) of Saskatoon; and nine grandchildren Michael (Leah), Christopher, Stephen, Shannon, Jason (Jami), Trevor (Becky), Jeff, Daniel, Jenny, as well as great granddaughter Hannah.
Before entering the Air Force, John met Eleanor Sawa, and they married in 1943. During his service in the Air Force, he became a featherweight boxer winning several championships - he loved to share his experience of “being in the ring with Joe Lewis.” After achieving his Commerce degree at the U of S, raising a family in Moose Jaw , and setting up Western Import and Export Company where he imported Lantz tractors from Germany , in 1963 John and Eleanor moved their family to Regina where their entrepreneurial ventures continued. In addition to founding Galon Insurance Brokers as it is known today, John supported his sons’ interest in the Medi-Drugs pharmacies located in Regina and Edmonton . John also had active involvement in real estate and property development – however, his greatest satisfaction was passing on his business legacy to his children and grandchildren.
Throughout his life, John was not only a successful businessman, but also an active community member. To name a few of his accomplishments, John formed Moose Jaw’s Park Hill Minor Baseball League, co-founded St. Peter and Paul Parish in Saskatoon, was a fourth degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, and was also a Life master in Duplicate Bridge.
John will be fondly remembered by those who knew him. We will especially miss his favorite quotes, “If I was any better I wouldn’t know what the hell to do,” and “you’re a Gentleman, a Scholar, and a Judge of Good Whiskey.”
Prayers for John will be held at 7:00PM on Thursday May 13th at Victoria Avenue Funeral Home, 2080 E Victoria Ave , Regina .
