October 30, 1928 – August 5, 2025
With heavy hearts and family by his side, Maurice Alfred Van Buekenhout passed away on August 5th, 2025 at the age of 96 years.
Dad is now together again with the love of his life, Velma his wife of 70 years. They met by chance in October of 1949.
Maurice is survived by his children, Maureen Ingenthron (Merle) Guy, Dan (Angela) and Laurie Van Buekenhout. Eleven Grandchildren, Ten Great Grandchildren and one on the way. He is also survived by his Brothers and Sisters in laws and several Nieces and Nephews.
Being born in the late “20s” Dad witnessed the beginning and the end of the Great Depression. Just like Mom, Dad knew how to work incredibly hard for his family. Dad worked at Eaton’s for over 44 years. He truly enjoyed his job and the people there he loved and worked with. Dad barely ever forgot a face. He seemed to know everyone. He was also an amazing storyteller and self-made historian. He was literally a walking encyclopedia. His amazing memory of historic, and life events, proved to be very accurate when Dad discovered YouTube. It was through this technology that he was able to “travel“ to his beloved Belgium, taking walking and driving tours. All from the comfort of his recliner. He was able to see his stories and memories come to life in the endless documentaries we watched with him. One documentary he watched was about the Regina Riot. He actually witnessed the riot at the age of seven, as he was present at the location.
Dad’s love and knowledge of the English Monarchy and their history was amazing. He knew as much about Queen Elizabeth and the Royals as any true Brit. Seeing the Queen in person in Regina was a highlight for Dad.
Dad was truly devoted to his Catholic faith. He was a parishioner of St. Cecilia RC Parish for 65 years. Dad loved and prayed for his church family until the very end.
Above all, Dad was an incredible Husband, Loving father, at times…a very busy grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved us and we all knew it.
Dad was an amazing gardener, history buff and probably started scrapbooking before it was popular. His binder collection on everything in his life is impressive. He loved coins, stamps, and Jazz music. He was our family’s official photographer.
At almost 97, Dad lived a full and complete life. He taught his children how to be compassionate, loving, kind and very grateful. We were able to have very coherent and current conversations with Dad almost to the very end. We are grateful for his sound mind. It was such a gift.
God has called you home, Dad. At last you are reunited with all those you love that have gone before you.
Till We Meet Again
And as Dad would say every time we left him “Thank you for coming“ Tell everyone, I say Hi and that I love them.”
Thank you to all of Dad’s Home Care Aides, especially Debbie, and Physiotherapist Shelaine, that all took such tender care of him. Shonda and Taja, for your tender care of Dad, and the support you gave us, as well. Thank you to the EMS crew who took what would have been almost one of their own, to Hospital for us. FLOWERS, Dad loved flowers. We would encourage you to bring flowers from your gardens if you like. We can return vases with an included phone number on the bottom of the vase. Maurice would love this.
In lieu of that, a donation to St Cecilia Roman Catholic Parish would be greatly appreciated.
