It's been awhile now Mercedes has been gone now.

I wanted to share my experience with you about her. 

I first heard her name in classes at The First Nation University of Canada. 
I heard she was in the same INCA program. 

I managed to finally meet her and I also have taken a couple of classes with Mercedes. 
She was a brilliant young woman. We also worked on the Broken Promises project together. 
I also went water testing with her and the team a couple years back.
Mercedes was kind and considerate. 
When I was sick in the hospital, Mercedes offered to bring me sage.
That was so kind of her.

She also gave me a few tips on beading.
I admired her strength and light as she shown through out her time here on earth.
She was always with her younger siblings. 
I was blessed to have known her for those few short years.

Thank you Mercedes for being in my life and sharing part of your story in my life.

I got to know Mercedes when she began to work for the Canadian Electronic Health Information System. Mercedes was amazing at helping design beautiful brochures and posts for social media platforms and so much more. She was quiet and unassuming and wonderful and she will be greatly missed. Praying that God will be able to give you comfort in this sad time you face. Mercedes was a gem and a great assistance to the company.

Mercedes, you are so loved. 
I am so privileged to know a soul like yours. Throughout high school, my memories are shared with us laughing and spending time with our crew. I enjoyed every time we saw one another. You are a strong advocate for Indigenous youth and Indigenous youth in care of the ministry. You will be so missed. Rest easy my girl. 

I did not meet Mercedes personally,  but heard a great deal about her from a friend and colleague. I learned how incredibly intelligent, kind, compassionate and passionate she was about issues of social justice, her Indigenous community and those she loved. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and all those who were touched by her life.  

Mercedes was a student of quiet and steadfast brilliance, with a kind and friendly smile for everyone she met.  She provided thoughtful leadership in planning an investigation into drinking water issues, produced Dakota-language podcasts and shared the concerns of youth during the pandemic, among many other activities. It was a privilege to watch her grow from student to teacher.  As a teaching assistant at our INCA Summer Institute, she inspired and encouraged new students. She was a hard worker with a beautiful, caring heart. In the days she had, she shared many important Indigenous voices and stories through her journalism. Sending sincere condolences and utmost sympathies to her families, friends & loved ones. I met Mercedes through INCA. She was a shining light of enthusiasm, always helpful and respectful, witty & entertaining. She was a role model for independence, determination & kindness. I am happy I met her!  RIP Mercedes. 

Back in 2018-2019 I met Mercedes at the FNuni. I was chaperoning students from Ontario and she was helping with the operations of the camp. It was my first time out west and she was just the sweetest to talk to and get to know.  I’m glad we crossed paths. Baamaapii.

I met Mercedes recently through the INCA program at FNUniv. At first I thought she was shy but no she was friendly and open and helpful. I enjoyed sitting beside her in class and chatting with her. On a cold rainy n windy day I was stranded in a bus shelter for a half hr n decided I was just going to go home. Mercedes pulled up and offered me a ride home. I was so happy n thankful she saw my fb post and came to get me. She was my hero since then. I could tell she knew alot about journalism and she offered to help me if I needed anything. I sat down and cried when I heard of her passing. I recently went for a sleep apnea test and she said she was going for one soon too. I seen that the affects of lack of good rest were having on her ability to stay awake sometimes. I understood that and I prayed for her. I wanted to see her get passed it. To all her family and friends, I'm sorry for the loss of this truly amazing woman. I miss her already and you have been in my thoughts this week. Creator comfort you and carry you through this time of grief and bring you consolation.

Mercedes helped us with a project to reach out to young people in Group Homes during COVID. It involved a podcast that featured the youth. She wrote the scripts, did the interviews and produced an outstanding product. It was excellent and I will always remember her initiative and ability to take something and run with it. Brilliant young lady, she will be missed in many circles.

She was the most beautiful granddaughter I knew she was smart she had a gold heart always happy to be around her god took another angel home way to soon she was to young to leave her family grandma loves you very much Mercedes Iam going to miss you. Rip
