It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our warrior Shonna Leigh Fischer on July 25th at the age of 51, surrounded by the love of her family. Shonna faced many health challenges throughout her life, but she faced every challenge with such strength, determination, and grace; she was always prepared to fight her next battle. Just like her dad, Shonna’s final days were fought as hard as she loved, which was intensely. In true warrior spirit, Shonna was never afraid to speak up for herself and advocate for what she needed. Those who knew her understood the battle she had but mostly saw the intense fighter she was and what her family meant to her.
Shonna is predeceased by her dad Adolph, her husband Daryl, her paternal grandparents Fred and Mary, and her maternal grandparents Bill and Gwen Cannon. Shonna is lovingly remembered by her mom Susan Fischer, brother Kyle (Grant), her sister Tara, and her companion and dog Mister. She also leaves to mourn all that loved her and that was many.
Shonna wore many hats throughout her life, but the career she was most passionate about was being a Travel Agent. This job brought her so much joy, not only because it allowed her to travel to beautiful places with her sister, but she could share her love of travelling by planning vacations for her clients. Even though her health stopped her from continuing to do this job she always talked about returning when her body allowed her to do so. Shonna was also an amazing cook who honestly made the best chocolate chip cookies, even though she could never eat them, she often made them for her family because she knew how much they enjoyed them. She was also an avid gardener who started planning and drawing her next year’s garden and flower design in the cold of the winter. Her illness took her legs, but Shonna didn’t let that stop her from doing what she loved, she designed a garden that she could access from her wheelchair, and we will do everything we can to see that garden to harvest and enjoy the fruit of her labour.
In Shonna’s memory we want everyone to honour the value of family and always be passionate about what you love, because Shonna always did everything with conviction.
As a family, we would like to send a special thank you to the nurses and doctors on 3F and SICU at the General Hospital for caring for Shonna during the past month. As well as the staff and nurses at the Regina Kidney Clinic, you meant a lot to Shonna, and we are grateful for the compassion and patience you shared with her over the past 5 years.
