Bernice Frances Vedos, 94 a long-time resident of Renton, Washington died peacefully in her sleep, with her loved ones close by at the home of her daughter Elaine, on the morning of July 30th, after a long bravely fought battle with Alzheimer's that lasted 14+ years, she never gave up.
Bernice was born in Saint Paul Minnesota, in 1927, to Harry Cecil Jackson and Frances Bernice Polaskey Jackson. She joined two sisters Ludvina "Vina" and Lorraine, as the fourth child. (A brother, Robert, had died shortly after birth.) Two more brothers, James "Jim" and Harry "Jr" were born after Bernice.
She met the love of her life, George while working at PACCAR in Renton. Bernice was a “Rosie Riveter” during WW2, like you see in the posters. On their dates they especially loved to dance. After turning his proposal down a few times, she and George were eventually married in the Catholic Church, Saint Anthony’s in Renton Washington in 1947. They had $20.00 to their name.
They were blessed with two daughters: Elaine, in 1951, and Joyce, in 1963.
Throughout their marriage they continued to dance and were members of the Minnesota Dakota Dance Club. In later years they discovered a place called Reno. They enjoyed it so much they would drive to Reno whenever they found the time. The spontaneity of their trips caused Bernice to keep a suitcase packed.
As for hobbies, Bernice was an incredibly talented cake decorator. She produced beautiful and sometimes comical cakes for family and friends. She was an artist and had a good sense of humor. She had a beautiful yard and enjoyed working in it. She instilled this work ethic in her children.
She lost George 24 years ago to bladder cancer, after lovingly caring for him in their home. Bernice remained courageous throughout her life, even when facing tragic circumstances.
Bernice had a very vibrant, outgoing personality. She was so full of energy that she rarely sat down. She was loving and generous to everyone and made a great pot of soup. She especially loved her babies, with seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, that called her “GG” and a great-great-grandchild on the way. She loved them all very much and would do anything for them, which included showering them with gifts.
She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Until we meet again.
