Born Carol Elsa Johnson on June 11, 1937, in Hamden, New Haven, Connecticut to parents Måns and Elsa Johnson, she was the youngest of three children. Carol’s mother passed away shortly after her birth and she was placed under the care of her Uncle Oscar and Aunt Hildur Johnson. Due to hardship and the struggle of raising their own family, the Johnsons made the decision to place Carol for adoption. She was soon adopted by Vilhelm “Bill” Cederholm and his first wife and her name became Carol Sandra Cederholm. Her parents divorced when she was very young and Bill remarried Geneva (née French) Cederholm; these became the parents that raised Carol and provided a stable upbringing in Stoughton, MA along with her three brothers.
After graduating high school, Carol pursued a career in dental hygiene and received her education from the esteemed Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists in Boston, MA, graduating in 1957. For over 30 years she worked as a hygienist in the towns of Marion and Wareham, MA dividing her time between the two locations. Her work reflected a deep commitment to health and service, qualities that resonated throughout her life.
In 1960 Carol married husband William “Bill” Fairweather and eventually settled in Mattapoisett, MA where they raised their family near the shore of Aucoot Cove in the community of Harbor Beach. Every 4th of July Carol would contribute a big coleslaw salad to the neighborhood party. She was also known for gifting plates of her infamous Christmas cookies to family and friends, in addition to her delicious Tollhouse cookies.
Carol was a woman of faith and for many years attended the Mattapoisett Congregational Church with her husband Bill. Her values were grounded in compassion, community, and quiet strength—principles she carried into every aspect of her life.
Eventually, Carol and Bill retired to Naples, Florida in 2000 where for 20 years they enjoyed the warm weather and sandy beaches. In 2021 Carol moved to Puyallup, WA to be closer to her son Kent and family. She was predeceased by her husband, William “Bill” E. Fairweather in 2017, as well as by her brother Kenneth J. (Bernie) Cederholm in 2008. Her biological sisters also predeceased her: Evelyn Lunde (née Johnson) in 2023 and Eleanor Fischer Nideng (née Johnson) on Dec. 30, 2025.
Carol is lovingly remembered by her son Mark Fairweather (and his friend Dianne Anderson) of Wareham, MA and son Kent Fairweather (and his wife Anne-Marie) of Bonney Lake, WA. She also leaves behind two cherished grandsons, Aidan and Sean. Additionally, Carol leaves a brother Russ (Joan) Cederholm of WI and a brother Karl (Jan) Cederholm of MA.
Carol’s legacy is one of dedication—to her profession, to her family, and to the values she held dear. She was humble and steadfast in nature and her smile could light up a room. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
The family gives thanks to the owners and caregivers of Blessed Assurance Adult Family Home in Puyallup, WA for providing the care and comfort Carol needed during her final years.
Remembrances may be made to the National Red Cross or a charity of your choice.
