It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Chan Dau Trangchiu, who departed peacefully on January 18, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family. Her journey began in Vietnam, where she was born, and it unfolded into a remarkable tale of courage, love, and dedication.
Amidst the tumultuous times of the Vietnam War, she fled her home country with her husband and young kids in search of safety and a better future. They spent three years in a Hong Kong refugee camp, a period that tested her resilience and shaped the strength she would carry throughout her life.
In 1982, Chan and her family made the courageous journey immigrating to the United States, seeking a new beginning. Their arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter in Seattle where she embraced her role as a devoted homemaker and fiercely dedicated mom, who emphasized the importance of upholding Chinese culture and traditions and instilled the value that family is everything. A pillar of strength, she dedicated her life to nurturing her family, leaving a permanent mark on the hearts of those she touched.
Chan was the proud mother of six children, and her home was filled with the laughter and warmth of a bustling family. She raised three wonderful sons and three beautiful daughters, guiding them through the trials of life with wisdom and love. Her legacy extends beyond her immediate family, as she leaves behind a legacy of twelve adoring grandchildren.
Known for her exceptional culinary skills, Chan was a great home cook who delighted in preparing dinners that brought her family together, especially on Fridays. Everyone looked forward to Family Dinner on Fridays, which was an invaluable time to connect and share a meal made with so much love. Some of her signature dishes included: steamed fish, joong/zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves), kow yuk (braised pork), fried chicken, jian dui (fried sesame balls), and bak see et (coconut peanut mochi). The aroma of her dishes and the taste of her love will forever linger in the memories of those fortunate enough to have shared a meal in her home.
A passionate basketball enthusiast, Chan found joy in watching the sport, whether cheering for her favorite players (Jordan, Kobe, Wang Zhizhi, Yao Ming, and Jeremy Lin) or bonding with family over games. Her love for basketball became a shared experience, creating lasting connections and cherished moments.
Above all, Chan was a beacon of love and kindness. She was cherished by her family who admired her strength, generosity, and the unconditional love she showered upon them. Her home was a haven of love, and her spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. The hole left by Chan’s absence will be impossible to fill.
She is survived by her six children (Kiu, Andy, Deryck, Kin, Hung, and Sheila) and twelve grandchildren (Aria, Kaylee, Ethan, Sydney, Brody, Clint, Tyler, Dylan, Scarlett, Calvin, Carson, and Ace).
As we bid farewell to Chan, let us celebrate a life filled with love, family, and the enduring legacy of a remarkably strong woman. She will never be forgotten and may her soul rest in eternal peace.
